I've got an '03 xb9r. It's my first bike and I apologize in advance for the newb question:

I usually fill up immediately after my gas light comes on (within 5 miles). I put about 2 gallons in before the auto shutoff kicks in at the pump. When I look at the gas level, it's 3-4" below the bottom of the fuel filler neck. Without topping off the tank, that would mean my gas light comes on when I have around 1.5 gallons left. Is that right?
Do you top off the tank to get it all the way to the underside of the fuel filler neck? How much more gas can the bike hold after the auto shutoff kicks in at the pump?

I might be new to Buell's but I've never used the "auto off" feature of the pump. I pull the sealer thing back with my hand and eyeball to just below the filler neck. Some of the senior members might have something different to say, but I've never had any problems. When all else fails consult your manual.

Normally I fill it up to the top about an inch below the rubber seal in the tank, any higher and the fuel comes out the vent when it expands. Keep in mind I have a 98 Tuber, no fuel level light, just a stumble then switch over to reserve.

I fill almost to the top of the tank. And my light comes on consistently with about a gallon left.

Hey Matt, I have the same bike and if I fill up right after the light comes on I can usually get about 2.7 gallons in it if I fill it up to just below the top of the neck. I have been doing this for about a year now and have never had any problems. Hope this helps, and welcome to the addiction!

I wouldnt suggest using the auto off on the pump. Once the low fuel light comes on, I fill mine to the lip and usually get about 2.7 gallons in just like squiers says.

i filled up my bike 03 xb9s today after my light came on, put in about 2.5 gallons. I wish it could hold more gas, I just filled up a couple days ago.

I agree with everyone else. the auto shut off is made for a car with a 2 foot filler neck. I let the auto shut off click then pull the nozzle up and top off the the bottom of the filler neck. usually 2.5-2.7 gallons
