Fork is a consumable, there's more to the problem than just the fork. Take your engine apart first and inspect all transmission gears. 2nd was popping out of gear and I just spent over 300 dollars in replacement parts (dog gears, actual 2nd & 1st gears, shift cam, since it has flat spots, fork).

EvilRX-once you remove the fluid & outer pieces, & pull the primary cover, look for the spring on the assembly .the shifter drum may OR not be damaged.(not saying all do )but a few have been in my shop for this problem due to them wanting to do the Speed Shifting thing. When I repair these problems I add AMSoil gear lube 75/90 when i can get it or i'll use a simular amsoil gear product. The clunking usually goes almost completely away. Sportster Trannys are ok but need good maint. A slipper clutch works best.(darn expensive though). American Sport Bike or The dealer w/have those parts. Pretty sure some part num., have changed. I use the AMSoil in my Bike Yep, Gear oil and so far so good on the Tranny.- Adj. of the primary chain on about 5000.mls when dead cold. IF needed.Every other tranny fluid change I'll mix 1/2 & the other 1/2 i'll use Redline so far so good. Hope it's not to bad on the repair ahead. Those trannys get really hot. Good luck.
