so my girlfriends fuel pump on her 07 xb12scg started making some bad noises after it would prime so i decided to change it out before i got that phone call that her bike wont start. changed it out filled up the tank and flipped the key. fuel pump primed and the bad noise afterwards was no longer there. go to start the bike and it fires right up and sounds really strong then a split second later the motor cuts out. every time you try to start this bike it starts and then dies right away. there has been one time that it idled for a few seconds longer and i went to give it some throttle and it tried to die so i let off and it idled fine again then eventually died after about 30 seconds. i have checked to see if its throwing any codes and nothing comes up.tried check the fuel pressure but i cant seem to find the fitting that works.bought the harbour freight tester with the correct ford fitting everyone says to get and i couldnt get it to attach correctly and shot gas halfway across my garage. im not really sure what i should do next. im used to working on carbureted Japanese bikes with little electronics so im kind of lost. any help would be greatly appreciated. i live in murrieta ca so if anyone is close and could take a look at it that would be cool as well. thanks

there is an excellent likelihood that your old pump was placing a very heavy electrical load on both the blade fuse and the relay. now the relay is failing when loaded again. both located in your fuse box on lightning model. before you do anything else replace the relay. they are dirt cheap and interchange part numbers below. available at all auto parts stores. same relay as many chrysler and ford a/c relays. look at underside of fuse box lid...find the 3 relays....and replace the one that controls fuel, etc. i believe it is the ignition relay but not looking at manual right now. then try and start and see what you have. report back please.

Thanks for the reply. So I haven't messed with the bike sense Friday. Today I took your advice on the relay and put it in. It ran a little bit longer and didn't idle to well. Just to make sure it was the relay I put the old one back in and it did the same with the old one as it did with the new one. It seems to run a bit longer than it did friday. When you give it a little throttle when it's idling it starts running real bad. Tries to die and starts popping out of exhaust and intake I belive. You let off the throttle and it goes back to idling better. Could it be the throttle position sensor? Thanks again

Do you have ECMspy and a cable? That's the easiest way to see what the bike is doing when it's running.
How high is your idle set? And are the throttle cables adjusted correctly?
Have you looked at the throttle body butterfly, while the bike is idling, to see if you can tell what's wrong?
And check that your plugs aren't fouled out. If you've been twisting the throttle on a cold engine the plugs are probably fouled.
I'd start with the plugs then go from there.

well i just checked for trouble codes again and now its throwing a code for the air intake temperature sensor.i have read before that if that is not working correctly it can cause the bike to run poorly. so tomorrow im going to have my girlfriend go down to american sportbike and pick one up and see if i get any different results. fingers crossed.

no i dont have ecm spy or the cable and i havnt checked the idle yet. the problem i am having is the bike wont even run long enough to really check anything. from the moment i get it started it dies usually a second or two later. there have been a couple times where it has ran for maybe 20 or 30 seconds at the most. i will be replacing the plugs tomorrow as well. thanks

Ask Al at American sport bike if he can help you out. Or have your GF throw a wink and smile and ask. He's helped me out via email on a few things. Great guy/people at ASB
BTE have you looked under the airbox to make sure all the wires and what not are good to go? You could have a chaffed wire causing you some grief.
