Hello

Bit of a story before i ask my question.
Brought my 05 Buell XB12 about two years ago from a local guy here in Nelson, New Zealand

I learned from him that the bike had been owned most is life by an aircraft technician and and then for a couple of years by him, interestingly enough the previous owner had died from a stroke.
At the time of purchase the bike had done 60000kms and has a K&N filter and very nicely made custom exhaust but needles to say without any tuning ran like a pissed off mule, the guy i brought if from was leaving for Australia with his family to do some mining.
4 weeks later i learned from my local Harley mechanic that was friends with the guy that he had died from a heart attack over in Aussie..RIP
Unfortunately for me the very same day i brought the bike i got stabbed up pretty bad by some guys when i was walking my missus home from town that night, put me in hospital for a week and 6 months of looking at my awesome example of a XB12 with out being able to ride it..my friends call the bike the black widow and my girlfriend now refuses to let me ever sell it....bonus :D! (she also loves coming on the odd ride with me which is surprising because i'd imagine it would be damn uncomfortable for her!)

Anyway..the previous owner left me a damn good log book that i have also kept up of his maintenance, however i really cant ask anyone what has been done to the bike before that as they are all....well not around anymore

Now the question
Do XB12s come factory with the seam at the bottom of the engine with silicon sealant joining them?
I would like to know if my bike as been split to fix the Oil pump gear and i would imagine this is a good indication!
I would also imagine that an aircraft technician would be on to these sort of things.
I have since replace every sensor in the bike, rebuilt the fuel pump and properly tuned the ecu and it is now smooth as silk...the oil pump gear has just always been a bit of a concern as i go away for trips in some difficult to service/ get parts/ get home locations

Thoughts please

Oil pump gear doesn't require splitting the engine, just have to pull the cam cover after relieving tension on the cams. Both of my spare xb cases have some sealant visible at the case seam though. So that's not a good indicator.

yes. the case halves are gasket-less and yama-bond type sealant is used to by the factory during the assembly process. quite common in the cycle world dating back to the kawi mach III 500 and honda cb750 of 1969 fame.

ahhh...the 165. of all the sounds in motorcycling IMO the most distinctive and ear-piercing have to be the kawi H1 and/or H2 with chambers.............and this..................http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KRBbdyWOJM
