hey guys,

My header studs are in a bit of a bad way.
They haven't snapped, but the threads are F***ed.

Do you think they could be re-tapped/ re-cut with the amount of space provided or is it a engine rotate and stud replacement??
also, what size bolt are the studs, 3/8'?

The nut side is 5/16-24 and the side that threads into the head is 5/16-18.

How bad are they? Tap and die sets are not magic. They cannot cut material that isnt there. If the threads are just a little deformed or you are trying to clean up some corrosion then often times it works. If they are stripped you need to replace the stud.

CHeers for the reply,

I'm replying from England, so they are a bit harder to find!

Replacing the studs... is that an engine out job?

The fronts are easy to get to. The rears not so much. I'd only attempt to remove the ones that are bad. If it looks good leave it. They are not fun to drill out when they break off. You might be able to access the rear by removing the fan and shock. Ive never attempted that though.

I highly doubt you'd have enough maneuverability through the fan hole to change a exhaust stud on the rear. But then again I dont think you'd be chasing threads on a rear stud either. ;)
