headers glowing after 5-7 min?

In the morn I head out to the garage to start the bike to warm. After 5-7 min I come back out and my headers are glowing at the top. My buddy said my bike (09 XB 12Ss) was prob runnin lean. Also, my headers are bluing about half way down. Is my buddy's diagnosis correct? I had the popping prob until I did the breather re-route, now popping is completely gone. The fan seems to come on a lot, but this is my first Buell so I am not sure what is normal. Not sure what my MPG is yet either. Can I do a change to my ECM w/ ECMspy to fix this? By the way, bike runs great, just concerned with the glowing, and want to tune the bike better if this is a rich/lean problem. Thanks for the help in advance!

Your letting it idle too long with no airflow over the engine. It only needs to warm up for the time it takes to get your gear on. (Helmet, gloves, jacket etc...)I would say two minutes max then just drive it easy for a couple miles.

Okay, I will try letting it idle for a shorter time, just seemed like it was getting a little too hot too quick, thanks for the input!

Another question, say I wanna use ECMspy in the future, does the ECMspy connectivity cable on americansportbike.com hook up to all fuel-injected Buells?

I recommend talking to Mike at xoptiinside
He has a way to use ECMspy on the 08 and 09 bikes and he also has the cables to hook it to your bike.

idle is a bit too long, but when set-up corretly, your headers shouldn't be glowing.

...you are running too lean!

I agree with LeFox. I have an '07 and when I ride in the morning sometimes while my bike is warming up my wife needs help with the kids quickly so sometimes my bike will be idling for I guess 5-7 minutes. My pipe never glows.

you can get them alot cheaper...

if you don't know how to work ecmspy, i would suggest collecting info first.

So that is the cable I need? I think I have read the tutorial about ECMspy about 5 times over now, not saying I'm an expert, but I definitely feel confident in hooking it up and seeing what I can do with it.

Well I talked w/ a guy this afternoon from americansportbike.com and he made it sound like 08 and 09 Buells basically aren't worth tuning until better programs are available. He said that the ECU will always be calculating the temp and altitude and adjusting the fuel/air mix accordingly. So, if you tune your bike on a cold day, the tune will be off on a warm day, vice versa. Is this information correct, or should I try and tune it as I am obviously runnin too lean with glowing headers after only 5-7 min of idle? Thanks!

this would mean that one of your sensors is off...since this glowing isn't normal.

if you map with average temp, you'll get better results then you are running at the moment.
otherwise, when the temp difference is too big and you have ecmspy...set up a warm & cold map ;)
