HELP!!!! 2008 XB12 Thunderstorm 1203 - WHAT IS IT?

Hello all,

A while back, I picked up a Buell Thunderstorm 1203 Engine. I was told it came out of a wrecked 2008 XB(r/s?) Anniversary Edition (white/blue/gold) bike. I bought it to use in a cart project and thought it would be a good option for a bright torquey, right drive motor and transmission. Additionally, I had hoped to convert it over to a HSR42 carb'd bike with an Ultima Ignition. Now that I am getting into it, it looks like I messed up - This engine doesn't have a timing pick up cup to accomodate the Ultima ignition...am I right?

I really don't want to get into the whole ECM/Tuning/Software/etc....thing - afterall I already have the Carb and ignition components - but I do not have an ECM or wiring harness.

What do I really have here? Can this be converted over to a Carb'd engine? Is it worth it?

Anyone interested in the Engine? Maybe it is time for be to move on to something else.

aaron: google 2007 buell xb and then click images. look at right side of motor. they are in essence the same from 2003-2007 inclusive. the "timing pickup cup" you mention is the area under the round cover on the right side cam cover. it is round. now google 2008 buell xb and then click images. look at right side of motor. see how different it is? reason is alot of changes were made for the 2008 model year including the oiling system, bottom end of motor, injection....lots of improvements. the 2008 is the anniversary model year. the motor is the same for 2008-2010 end of production. under that large oval shaped cover on right side is the improved oiling system. that large oval cover that should say thunderstorm on is the visual cue the motor is 08-10 model years. it is either a 1203 or 984 motor. visually they appear the same.
