I just got a new 03 xb9s and need some help figuring out why it is set up this way and what these parts are. here are some pics, if you could just let me know the reasons behind this configuration it would be greatly appreciated. thank you

what is this sensor on top of the trans? it is where that unknown box plugs into

Okay some one has done the breather reroute so you need to route the hoses... you can check out one of the many threads on rerouting the loop is just to close off the place the hoses use to be routed to.

Also someone has done a chain conversion so I would assume there is a lot o work done to the bike one pic is of the chain tensioner

Well if you pulled that loop of hose out of the lower airbox that's in the first picture, that's where the breather hoses would normally go. I assume there was a catch can connected to them or there would be oil all over your rocker boxes.

The sensor on top of the trans is the speed sensor. That's how your bike keeps track of speed and your mileage. I'm just guessing here, but that box maybe corrects your speed since you have a chain drive.

1st pic looks like a breather re-route unfinished?!?! The looped hose on the botom of the air box is to keep dirty air out of the engine. the connectors with the green things on them are your front and rear injectors(be careful when you hook them up because one is for the front and one is for the rear cylinder, your bike might run weird if hooked up backwards) dont know what that black box is for, i hve never seen it on my xb9, is there anthing on the back? the sprocket underneath the chain is to keep it under tension. and the sensor that is on top of the trans is the speedo sensor, and no that black box doesnt plug into it, it plugs into some wires in front of your chain. where did you find that black box?

You should definitely post an intro thread I'm sure a lot of people would love to check out your bike [up]

well, a little history, the bike has the full ti-force exhaust, a buell race ecm, the chain conversion, k&n filter and a bunch of steel braided lines everywhere. the tensioner for the chain has a missing tooth and the gear is wearing really bad. i believe it should be replaced, just cant find the part. there is not a collector can for the breathers, they just tied the lines connected to them up to the frame near the back cylinder. after a bit of riding i will notice a bit of sludge seeping out near my seat. on the back of the box it says "SH" and it is spliced into the wires that lead into the speed sensor, only thing is, the box is not turned on or anything that i know of, so maybe my speed is incorrect? the picture of the plug with the green is not for my injectors, that one is wider, this plug is just hanging loose near my throttle body and everything else is hooked up as far as i can tell. only this is, i don't know if there is some type of hose that should connect to that small part on my throttle body. the bike does not start easy for being fuel injected, and i think it might have something to do with that.

I'd switch the loop to come up from the bottom to prevent it from getting sucked into the box? Don't think you want that meter to be blocked either.[confused]

That black plug with the green gasket is for your o2 sensor. The hose barb coming out of your t.b. should be plugged. It's used for the evap can on California bikes.

can someone else confirm that the hose barb on the tb should be plugged. its open on my 04xb12s too

i looped the holes in my airbox too only i have the loop on the underside like someone suggested before.

i don't know if the bike was raced or not. it very well may have been, but the bike is in such good condition for it's age, i tend to think the person who owned it previously just wanted it a bit quick? lol! it makes sense that the loop should be upside down, or just plug the holes altogether. so i should just get a rubber cap to plug that barb right?

I ran the breather bypass like this with a tie-wrap to prevent it from moving.

Hi how are you getting on with getting the bike started,
the good thing with chain drive is that you can now gear the bike by changing front or rear sprockets to suit the bike

yes use a plug on tb, my plug had fallen off too i just used a rubber boot with a tiny bit of silicone so it wont fall off again, you could just get rid of hoses and plug airbox holes if you want
