just about to buy a xb12r firebolt please pretty please tell me if i am about to buy a faulty bike or if it is 100% perfect.

Dude... get ready for the Buell Cough! No one told me about it, I bought the bike found the cough and then found this site. There has been a ton of information here, but without this site I am sure that I would have been totally clueless. My only real complaint is that Buell knows about the cough and instead of trying to fix this issue... they just say that it is just characteristics of a Buell.

Nothing is 100% perfect. I have an XB12Ss and sure I could nitpick but overall it is a great bike. The only bike I would trade it for is an XB12R (maybe a Ducati, Aprillia, or Bimota but I trying to be realistic). If your buying an 08 then it should be even more trouble free since there is no more TPS resets required among other improvements. Maybe others with more miles on their bike can chime in on breakdown related faults.

never had problems...

i did however had several with the duc...italians and electronics don't mix :p

the 7k rpm read line is about the only issue i have. it should be 10k!! oh and cough cough

I would rather have a 6th gear sort of like an overdrive. I hate riding the highways at 80mph and my RPM's are at 4k, I would rather do the same at 2700 - 3000. I know the 1125 has a 6th but I think the ratios are closer if i'm not mistaken, and the redline is higher. So I guess that means on the 1125 you are doing 80mph at like 5500 or so RPM :D Oh well, they'll get it right eventually

I have a 2007 XB12R which has 11,500 miles on her. (military boy with a lot time on my hands, in fact just returned from Sturgis)[smirk]
I have had zero problems.......the Cough can be corrected by performing the fresh air / unrecycled gas modification.
Some of my military brothers run "Ducs", I am happy that I don't have to perform as much maintenance as they do.:p

it's an o/d...

1 to 5 ratio's are closer, but not that much...
should be bit more than a drop of 500rpm @ 75mph

think it was a baker transmission, but it needs a e few adjustments...

i had alot of problems with my buell but turns out it was all dealer error the mojor problem with buells is the lack of mechanical experiance at the dealers .. ps you have harley mechanics working on high tech buells thats why they went with a aprilia motor in 08.. hopefully they will come with aprilia mechanics.

i own 05 xb12r firebolt all stock i purchased the bike with only 3000km on the clock, now its at 16000km and have a few problems with it wich hopefully can b sorted out with advice from other buell owners, but if i knew more about bike bfore buying one i dont think id currently own one,jap bike would of got better value for my money

LeFox,

The Baker 6-speed tranny upgrade is for tuber Buells, not the XB-era bikes.

I have a xb12r with 2k So far trouble free. Overall I have no regrets. The cough from idle gives me no problems I just slightly rev the motor before taking off, kinda like a dirt bike. Its all part of the fun of riding a buell. To me it seems the xb12r requires constant attention when riding. Going from point a to point b seems timeless compared to the boredom of a cruiser. Iv'e had the bike a little over a month now and I can't ride it enough. By the way for the first time in 44 years, I look forward to going to work in the morning. Unless I have to take the car.

You might want to check on the fitment of that Baker kit. As far as I know, it doesnt fit XB style Buells. Its only for the tubers I think. I will check with Baker direct.
