I recently bought a 2007 Lightning 12S, long story short I rode it a couple times with no issue, went out of town for a week, came back and rode it to work about a 20 min ride, almost to my destination the engine light came on, as I was pulling into the nearest parking lot all instruments went black and the needles went to zero. I stopped the bike and turned the key on and off the gauges came back but it didn't have enough juice to start. I didn't know when a new battery had been installed on the bike so I decided the easiest thing was to get a new battery so I could get the bike home. Replaced the battery and it fired up, I drove it home. I checked the battery voltage and it is definitely not charging. The system doesn't have a draw when the key is off. I am trying to figure out the proper way to isolate the component that is not working. Any tips or advice how I should go about this is greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same kind of issue, my engine light will come on midway thru a ride and will not start right after i turn it off. But if I wait 20mins or so it will start right up w/ no light.

Does that sound like the same kinda issue?

Sharrison8,

Hmm, no my bike just doesn't charge :) After running through the steps, it puts out the proper AC voltage at 2000 rpm so the book says that means the voltage regulators is bad. Now I need to get a new regulator and hopefully that will fix my charging problem.
