I was coming up to a light at about 2000rpm at low speeds and slipped it down into neutral and when I did I heard a pretty loud "THUNK".. it was weird. I never heard it before and didn't hear it again for the rest of the day... it was almost like a "knock" or a real loud metallic "pop". Tranny fluid is new and full, no leaks.. linkage tourqed... I tapped the shift knuckle down on the splined shift knob when I replaced it after that wreck a while back.. shifts nice and smooth... tightened primary chain a few months back.. any idea what that was?

May be nothing to worry about with only one occurance, but if it repeats you may want to delve into it. I recall having that happen randomly and on rare occasion on another make of bike. I seem to recall I never thought too much of it other than like you are saying, it was wierd, but do recall that after replacing the clutch stack for other symtoms it didn't happen any more. This does not mean that is what is happening on your bike. I'm sure you'll notice if it does it again.

yeah it was weird.. I guess it was just some mechanical error.. other than that sound, nothing happened.. it didn't even feel wired, just sounded weird.

Mine has made a similar noise but only when I accidentally slip it all the way to 1st. These HD transmissions do NOT like being put into first while rolling. MAybe thats what happened. I got 39,000 miles on my bike(2005 xb12) and I have never heard a clunk going into neutral.

I had the the clunk, might consider adjusting the clutch but in the process screw the adjuster screw in a few extra turns actuate the lever then let the screw out and adjust according to manual. I say this cause like Lesley said they dont like down shifts into first while moving, the clutch plates tend to stick together. You can notice this when trying to roll it in gear with clutch pulled in, still drags.

yeah I also noticed that if you start it in 1st with the clutch in, the bike pulls forward a tad then settles down... is that normal also?

I had no choice at the time.. I discovered that after I went down and my shift lever broke off in 2nd... I could only manage to get it back into 1st and limp her back home in just that one gear..ha ha

The only thing I can think of it you may have slightly slapped it into first but not all the way so it popped back up into neutral. Check adjustments and move on!
