I just got my bike yesterday (not even registered yet) - and already dropped my first $100 into it. I bought frame pucks from the local harley dealer - and got some header wrap. I was searching threads how to do it - and got some good information.

Here is a quick HOW TO for those who haven't done it yet, or are intimidated by it. It took me about an hour - but it is real easy to do... dont be scared...... you can just unwrap it along the way if it isnt turing out the way you want:

before I wraped it ( and before i threw on the pucks ):

Tools of the trade:

NOTICE! dont get 6' zip ties... i had to go back to lowes, and get 11" ones. the 6" are too small once you get down near the bottom of the double pipe.

I didnt wet the wrap --- as some people had done. Just figured I would try it dry first and see how it turned out. I think it worked fine. I cant comment on wetting it.

I bought the wrap from autozone - 49 bucks for 50 ft. of 2 inch wrap. black. I am going to measure, but i bet i used 25 feet. If I used less than that... I will sell the rest - I have a ton left over.

There is fiberglass... so wear gloves. a mask would help also - I have some crap in my throat now - but oh well. nothing a few coors lights wont wash out.

I didnt remove the right side air scoop - i tried... but had trouble getting off the bolt INSIDE the scoop. just gave up on it and figured out an easier solution.

I started the wrap - and then kind of "slid" it up under the plastics... pulling it tight the whole way. looks good.... peice of cake.

I wrapped the back one down to wear they met... and i couldnt wrap it anymore - pulling it tight the whole time... then i just let the piece hang... and worked on the next one.

I cut a 10 foot peice or so.. for the next one, and clamped the top, and started wrapping.

I zip tied it once the two pipes met, and cut off the excess. Now i was ready to use the extra wrap from the first piece... and combine both pipes.

you will want to remove the belly fairing but losening about 6 srews.

this allows you full access to the bottom of the pipe. go as low as you can go.. and zip tie it.

Now you are done, and just need to put your plastics back on:

I also found - with a flat head screw driver you can kind of poke and move the wrap just enough to make it more of a clean look.... if any of it buckelled or twisted during your installation.

finished product:

It actually looks blacker than in some of these pictures... but I might throw some high temp. black paint on it anyways....

If you are on the fence of "if you can it yourself" --- believe me.... u can. just take your time and it will come out great!

I suggest the DEI wrap paint. It will help it from falling apart, and keep the color black.

Looks good and thanks for the detailed pictures, I know some have requested that. [up]

My experience with the header wrap, is you can get a lot tighter wrap and fit if you soke the wrap in hot water.

Also, I had the steel zip ties for mine too, but they came loose after rides. I unded up using hose clamps

The color will last longer if the wrap has the correct overlap and help with heat control correctly. When you have wide overlaps it will still be hot around the pipe more so than with a smaller overlap. If you are doing it for cosmetic looks ignore me.

HOW TO

I will have to switch to hose clamps if these things losen up. Oh9bolt --- I used 2 inch wrap, so i think it "looks" wider, than if you were to use 1" wrap..... but... i could be wrong?

anyone know if you can buy DEI wrap paint in local stores or only online?

Here is a better picture of the color:

i used zip ties probley 4000 miles ago and they are still fine. i painted mine with just regular high temp header paint and it worked great.

Personal suggestion but to get a tighter wrap and less worry on it loosening up later on soak the wrap in water for a couple minutes before you wrap the pipe. It makes a mess though so if you are worries about the bike staying clean best bet isto remove the header and wrap it off the bike.

The wrap job on my bike is now over 2 years old ad te metal zip ties are holding just fine. Yeah it sat for the last year but still holds tight.

I hate to tell you this, but you should be starting at the bottom, that way the cracks are facing down and moister wont seep in as easy.

I've heard that too but waters gonna soak in regardless. if you get them wet when u wash it or something just make sure and run it till they dry out

I use 2" (50' of it) also I'm just speaking from experience from doing it 3 times recently twice on armymp09s bike and once on mine the first time the wrap overlap was wide because of only 25'of wrap the space between the overlap turns white quick from the heat the next 2 times they were wrapped with better overlapping and they held their color and still do.

definately work out of a two gallon bucket fulla hot water.... as you pull it through, throw it back in... once you start he bike up itll contract and shrink around the pipes.. definately use high temp silicone spray to prolong the life, and metal ties work great*** IF YOU USE THE RIGHT ONES, even hose clamps strip out under expansion if theyre cheap, either way.. nicely done.looks good.

looks good Mace. In the future may I suggest unless your set on color, try the titanium wrap. Its so much easier to apply then fiber, and is supposed to hold up better. I have only had it on for about 500 miles now, so I can not speak for its durability yet. They dont suggest you paint it, personally I love the color. I have used fiber 3 times, and was never happy with the maintenance. Unless you keep painting it with their silicone spray its going to fall apart.

I used 1" DEI suggests it for smaller diameter tubing. Plus its easier to get around all the curves of the 1125 header.

SICK I'm going to use titanium this next time that is an awesome overlap that looks amazing!

im about to re-do mine, as it was damaged when i crashed. it was already done when i bought it, but its good to know that its pretty simple.

jornum, thats awesome! I got to do my next bike like that. I learned that with fiber blk you've got have a tighter wrap. bolt explained our problems we had with my 1st wrap job. Although u could use the paint to keep it looking good even with a loose wrap.

thanks guys, wrapped it all on the bike. there is still a little mess with the titanium, but not nearly as much as fiber, and it does not irritate your skin at all. I still wore a respirator, as its not good to breathe in anything like that. Its also very pliable, and much easier to wrap then fiber with out having to wet it at all. For 1125 owners, 50' of 1" wrap was about perfect to the end of the header. Then I used another 30' or so for the Barker downpipe.

Going to wrap my new x1 header next.
