What's the best paint to use on the muffler? Anyone prefer a certain brand or type over another?

I used some super high heat, oil, and gas resistant Rustoleum. Seems to have worked very well.

I used 1,200 degrees, its a tad chalky looking, next time I paint it, Im gonna cure per instructions then try buffing it with some wax. Its holding up well, but I dont ride in the rain either.

Yes if it is stock but I dont recommend it[down], I just had mine powder coated and the powder coat peeled off. But with that said mine is modified, if you have a stock pipe you might be able to with no issues.

I would highly recommend haveing the pipe ceramic coated. I had mine powderocated for $40 which peeled off, then had to turn around and spend $40 on the ceramic coating. So I could have just spent the same initial amount to have it ceramic coated, even if it cost a little more you will know for sure it will last!!

Most powder coating is only good to between 400-500 degrees, the satin black ceramic coating I got is good to 2000 degrees to way more than I will ever need.

Here are a couple pics the powder coat looks great but like I said it might peel from the heat.

Good, only difference between the powder coat and ceramic coat in looks is the powder coat has more shine. But you can also get a ceramic coat in gloss silver.

Bad, you can see where it looks rusty in the center

This is what the inside of my pipe looks like which shows why the center was effected, as the heat is directed basically redirected to the right side and front of the pipe.

Here is an image of a black CERAMIC ocated muffler, obviously not mine but you can see the flatter look the the shine.

Thx xtreme. Been tossing the idea around. I want to black out my bike this winter, so it'll have to wait til then.

i have used vht and black grill paint and they bolth work good, but neither will last ,it will start to rust in a year or 2. best is the ceramic coating..except for the price.

h'mmm I'm glad this thread popped up i was about to use VHT, but i guess i need to just get the ceramic coat.

I'de verify if ceramic chips from the rocks being flung onto it. if it does you'll still have a rust problem and will probably end up spraying it to touch it up anyway.

i did VHT Flameproof header painted my race exhaust. let dry for a day or 2 then buff it with wool buffer pad and it will shine pretty good. i gave mine about 3-4 coats.

A big problem people run into when using VHT paint or Grill paint is they dont let it dry properly. For the best outcome and longest lasting application one you need to prep it properly and tht includes baking off and or removing any oils or fluids, but then the part most overlook is High Temp paints take a long time to cure properly, between 4-5 days if you just let it sit.

Or to speed it up:
On the Vehicle
•Paint must be completely dry before curing(how long this takes I have no clue)
•Run at idle for 10 minutes
•Cool for 20 minutes
•Run at idle for 20 minutes
•Cool for 20 minutes
•Run under normal operating conditions for 30 minutes

Off the Vehicle
•Paint must be completely dry before curing(again no clue to this timeframe)
•Heat to 250°F (121°C) for 30 minutes
•Cool for 30 minutes
•Heat to 400°F (204°C) for 30 minutes
•Cool for 30 minutes
•Heat to 650°F (343°C ) for 30 minutes

What I did years ago was to glass bead blast the pipe hang it up with wire then take your tourch and heat it good. you can see the moisture leaving the metal then paint while its still warm.

anyone else have some info on getting the headers off without dropping the motor..? i may just paint them on the bike
