Hey everybody. I haven't been around in quite a while. I was in a pretty bad accident in June of last year and went through a couple surgeries and a lot of rehab. My '05 XB12R was destroyed:( The day was nice and I was having a decent ride home from work to see my wife who was 5 months pregnant. A lady in an suv pulled out from a yield sign and attempted to cross multiple lanes and slammed on the brakes in front of me. I was going from a 30 mph zone into a 55 mph zone. Probably around 45 At the time. There were a lot of cars around the area. I ended up clipping the rear passenger corner of her suv with my bar end and slammed the left side of my body into the suv. The bike kicked right and threw me down the road. I slid/rolled somewhere around 50-75 ft down the pavement and hit a road work sign which kicked me up into the air enough to hit the top box of the guard rail and then flew/flipped 30 ft down a boulder covered embankment. I landed sitting up with my feet under me on rocks. I was suprised to be alive. I took my own helmet off and moved all my limbs. After an interesting ambulance ride and many xrays, CT scans and MRIs, I had no broken bones, a grade 3 torn spleen, road rash on my right shoulder, forearm and legs. Torn right labrum requiring surgery due to a severe right shoulder dislocation. My left forearm skin and muscles were ripped open possibly by the rear of the suv requiring surgery and no head injury. I am just thankful to be alive and able to hold our 4 month old son. Thank you to everyone on Buellxb for being a great help over the past 6+ yrs that I had my buell. I am not sure when I will have another road bike but i will keep floating around the site. Good luck to you all and ride safe.

Oh I know. My buell did great. I was not at fault. The lady was ticketed multiple times and I had a few witnesses who gave the same account that I did of what happened. Thank god people stopped and stayed til it was all cleared up.

[up] nice to hear you're doing ok, focus on getting better and being with your family...the bike will come again in time.

What gear were you wearing? Thinking back was there anything you would change about the situation? (Obviously not go through it) But I mean was there any way you could have seen her or saved it? I always like to hear about other's people's crashes, their perspective, and their thoughts. Thanks for sharing! [up]

Unfortunately I was going against my rule of ATGATT. I had jeans and a sweatshirt, no gloves. As far as things to do different, I looked and saw the lady looking at what I thought was me but obviously not. I did all I could. There is not much else I could change. After my accident the state DOT got a grant to change the intersection because tons of accidents happen in the same spot.

As a new father myself, I'm ecstatic to hear it all worked out for you & your family; there's nothing more important than that! [up]

Here's one of many interesting comparisons on how various textiles hold up to abrasion. Denim doesn't even last for 5' at 50mph! Leather is good for over 80'.

Glad to hear you are doing well.

My track day incident...60 mph low-side coming out of a turn. Bike slid about 90 ft, I slid about 120.

Vanson 1.4 mm comp leather, CE armor.

Result: sprained right shoulder
