Hey guys. I just bought a 2003 xb9r and the starter is bad. I have been trying to use the search option to find posts related to what starter i should purchase, but have been unsuccessful. I am sure this have been discussed before... a link or just a simple recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
Is the ebay "high torque" starter okay? $139 shipped.

what is bad with ur starter. give us details as the starter it selfe has normally no problems. Example: my 2005 XB had start problems which was (after 3 month) a simple problem with a plug.

Take the starter out and have a look. Is the flywheel ok check the carbon and motor bearings, are both ok check and adjust the solenoid contacts and the coil resistance.

Okay so i took the starter out and bench tested it. Everything works fine. Put it back in and now all I'm getting is a single click from the solenoid. Tried to do the same bench test in the bike and the starter does not turn. It almost sounds like the starter arm is hitting the flywheel... Is this even possible?

Only one way to really tell if it's hitting something inside, and that's to pull off the primary cover and inspect. You will need a new gasket set though... And if you pulled the starter off, you need a new gasket for that as well.
Sure you are getting power to the starter? Neutral switch / clutch has to be engaged to allow circuit to function.
Still worried about your initial description of "Grinds"....
I'd pull the cover and look. If you do have something grinding in there, then your transmission, clutch, primary chain, etc are all compromised.

Battery was low. The single click was from the arm. being extended, but not enough juice to turn it over. Charged the battery back up and it fired fine.
