I bought a 2007 XB12r, 140 miles, flawless. It has a used battery in it, but needs a new one. It hasn't been run in a long time. Once I received it, I installed the battery and did a once over. I checked oil, tires, filter ect...seems perfect in every way. It's bone stock and after I cleaned tons of dust off of it....looks great.

I know with only 140 miles it really doesn't need and oil change, but due to time sitting I will do one. During the initial run, it ran terrible....once I warmed it up and after about 30 miles, it runs perfect.

My question is this...anything I should look for, do or not do because of being in storage so long or the very low miles?

Thanks in advance!

So, I shouldn't worry about the oil just yet and run it to 500 miles? Or should I change the 2007 oil, run it to 500 miles and change it again?

I'd change the oil for sure, both holes, run it for the normal break in, change it again. I'd also run full synthetic if it were me. As far as the tires go, how was it stored? Up on stands or sitting on the tires? Any dry rot? Tires are relatively cheap, get some new shoes for it. Look at the brake fluid as well, even though it's a closed system, it may have drawn some moisture, possibly turned to gel a little.

The tires are perfect, no wear, rot, cracks, flat spots ect, but for peace of mind I will change them out. I didn't think of the brake fluid gelling or getting moisture, I only checked levels, I will check it/change it.

Thanks!

Fork seals possibly questionable too. No need to replace until they start leaking though, I wouldn't think.

Change the oil immediately(I personally wouldn't even have run it with 5-6 year old oil that is likely conventional. Also change oil filter. Ride "normal" until about 500 miles like suggested then change again, I'd use synthetic as mentioned above. I wouldn't waste money on synthetic for 300-400 miles though. Don't run the engine too hard or too easy during break in. Try to vary rpm a lot.

Also change the primary fluid as well. Most people use 20w50 motorcycle oil for engine and primary. I use amsoil, some use royal purple, screaming eagle, mobil, etc...

I'd also change brake fluid, check tires really good, check air filter, etc...

Also would lube all maintenance points(clutch and throttle levers, etc).

Fresh fuel too, although sounds like you already ran it so that's not an issue. Oh and of course the new battery and keep an eye on the forks.

I agree 100% with all who said to change the tires and fulids asap. Regardless of age, tires and oil most definitely have a life span. The bike is an 07 so it was probably manufactured late 06 which means the tires are 6 years old. I wouldnt ride no further than I had to.

DO NOT USE torque wrench on oil drain plugs. Do it by feel and DO NOT overtighten.

Thanks for the advice. Tires and fluids will be changed out. Your correct about the manufacture date...late 2006.
