Hey guys, I'm new to the site and to Buell's. I always wanted one and finally got a 2003 XB9R with 15,000 miles on the clock. Rode it a few hundred miles the first two weeks and love it! An this Forum is great, I have found so much good info hear already.

So I took to the local dealer for a PA inspection, full fluid change/15000 mile service and a new drive belt. The dealer is a HD/Buell dealer but they ordered the wrong belt at first so my confidence is down a bit.

Since getting the bike back the engine sounds different. I hear a tapping as I rev the engine, kind of sounds like a valve tap. The was not present before the service. They used HD 20/50 oil.

I am not familiar with V-twins at all. Is this sound normal or is there something I should look into? Thanks!

since it wasnt doing it before i would say its not normal for your bike.

welcome to the forum, post some pics

Thanks for the replys. I am not sure what oil tge previous owner used 20/50, straight 50, full synthetic. I am just guessing 20/50 as he had all services done at a dealer. I was not sure if changing from synthetic or even straight 50 could cause the noise to show up on these V-twins. I know they are noisey motors.

Needed inspection and since the local HD dealer had a good price on tge oil change I went with it.

Yeah the belt snapped on the way to the service. It was pretty brown and weathered looking. The previous owner Took good mechanical care of the bike, but left it out to weather so she was looking pretty rough. Took me a full day to polish all the nasty stains out and touch everything up. Just polished the headers this weekend. Looks pretty good now. Just having a hard tome getting the wheels totally clean. Used a whole can of wheel cleaner and scrubbed like hell but still pretty stained. I need to look into how to post pics and I will get one on here. Thanks guys.

No, I had standard HD 20/50 put in. I have no idea what the previous owner used. That is why I wondered if I might have just started hearing the noise. If he used synthetic and I did not, could that cause the noise?

2004 xb12s - I live in Lebanon, work in Harrisburg.

i use scotchbrite and wd-40 on my rims they cleaned up nice. I had the same issue with the HD 20/50 I drained it after 30 miles and filled with mobile one vtwin and noise wasnt as loud.

yea i had engine noise with conventional, put in mobile 1 the other day and it help cut noise by 50% ATLEAST. Run synthetic and noise should go away

Thanks. Hate to drain oil that I just paid for, but I guess I learned a lesson. I can live with the noise for a while, so I might put a few miles down and change it out before my vacation.

Thanks for the suggestion on the wheels. I had used a Scotchbrite pad with an entire can of wheel cleaner. I'll give WD-40 a try, but I think I need something stronger.

This is one of the best forums I have been on, so much good information and great people.

Try PB-Blaster Its got one more chemical that will eat away corrosion. Trust me it works. I was one of the first that would swear to WD-40 and green Scotchbrite pads. PB Blaster is the ****!!! You will find that you might not need WD 40 anymore at all. In fact do one area with PB and one with WD just to see. This is like an Infomercial.:D
