Who here has replaced the oil pump drive gear with the newer style? I got 22k miles on my 05 xb9sx and im heading to Hawaii where I won't have a garage to work on the bike. Can you replace it with the engine in the frame? and if so, is it a pain in the a$$?

Yes you can do it with engine in. pull the header and right side case . Not a fun job but not hard if you take your time.

I have a somewhat related quetion.

I am replacing my header and cam cover on my 04 xb12s. 25k miles on the bike, should I be looking at doing this at the same time?

you don't have to remove the lifters or rods, if you want to check to see if it even needs done I'd suggest pulling the oil pump and looking up with a flashlight to see what the wear on the gear is like. you'll need the locking tool, I have one I'd let you use but I let somebody else use it last fall and haven't gotten it back yet. I'ts a very simple change out.

for those of you that are going to pull the cam cover and haven't done it before, undo the timing cover and detach the plate otherwise you're going to pull the cams and then you will have to rotate the engine and relieve the pressure on the lifters to get them back in, and you'll have to make sure your timing marks are correct.

rtac, if you're going to be in there it's not a bad idea to switch it out.

You mean pull the cam position sensor and rotor before removing the cam cover itself, as in step 6 (see above)?

yes, but from doing it, I pulled the timer cover then the cps/ timing plate. then the rotor is behind that I believe. it's attached with a bolt and if it gets pulled because you forgot it's just a lot more work.

So here is what I have gathered,Since there is no step by step write up that I know of.

Step 1
Remove Header
Step 2
Remove Cam position sensor and Rotor Cup
Step 3
Remove Cam Cover
Step 4
Remove Oil Pump
Step 5
Install Pinion Gear Nut Locking Tool
Step 6
Remove Pinion Nut
Step 7
Remove Pinion Gear
Step 8
Remove Shaft Key
Step 9
Remove and Replace Oil Pump Drive Gear

Reverse Steps to Install.
Am I missing anything?

I pulled the oil pump to check the wear before I got too far and it looks better than I thought it would. Guess ill keep everything for my project engine..
