I know I am going to probably get hammered on this question because I know it comes up a good bit about what oils to use. But... My question is not what oil to put in the tranny or what brand to use.

It is, should I run standard oil or full synthetic?

I had talked to some of the teachers at Yamaha from a class that I was in and oil came up with some us in the class and the same question was asked to the teachers. From what they had told us that they were told by most oil producers is that the only real advantage that synthetic has over conventional oils is at high temps. Other than that, there is no advantage. ( That is just what some of them had been told.)

I just recently got my XB9R and want to do a service on it since I dont really know when the last time is that it was done. Synthetics seem to run more than twice the price so is it really worth spending the money on when I will change the oil on my bike at least every 3k. I also have not found anything that says you have to run synthetic in the motor so that leads me to believe that it is not really needed.

I was thinking that maybe it would be better to run synthetic in the Buell since it is an air cooled machine and in stop and go traffic, I am sure temps will get up there on the motor. But is it really going to get hot enough to really need the synthetic?

I highly recommend doing synthetic. The bike opertating temp is 140 degrees C (284 degrees F) to 215 degrees C (419 degrees F) so the operating temp is high in my opinion when the normal car optimum temp is 215 degrees F.

These air/oil cooled bikes do get hot. I run the formula + in the primary and the HD synthetic in the engine but I've also used mobil 1 and Valvoline synthetic vtwin

:p
you should check a bit the Forum and u will find..... people dont answer because they are probably tired of the Oil Question...

go to page 2 and you find another oil question ..with answers...;)

PS: I use Belray Sport Trans Fluid...[up]

Thats what I thought and I know this question does get asked a lot.

I knew the bike would get hot but I did not realize it got that hot. Now that I know what the operating temp range is, I will probly stick with the Syn oils.

I don't know how my life can possibly get any better! the first of February....a warming trend coming here in Amish country...SuperBowl 2 days away..... Lesley with drain plug info.......and a guy looking for oil recommendations.:D

rigger: i believe you're a "price conscious" shopper. that's a good thing. get yourself 4 quarts of Castrol Act-Evo 20-50. available at most all dealerships and even some auto parts stores. best oil on the market at a price point and works wonderfully in buells/sportsters. and while i'm saving you $ may i be so bold as to mention that the 2007 and up Toyota Yaris 1.5L oil filter is the same as all Buell XB's. available at all chinese crap-marts for about $3.

John you forgot to remind him about the drain plugs!!

For the love of God and all that is holy please don't use a torque wrench on them oil plugs.

Also remember in regards to changing the oil please don't use a torque wrench. And if you get decide to go against the manual and install a larger/ wider rear tire then please post all inquiries on here to the attention of: lunaticfringe

Hahaha now where'd I put my nerve pills?

you can use a torque wrench
Nice idea konarider94 [up]
I mean its not like there has been 500 threads about guys stripping the plugs right?
[confused]
I said it before and I'll say it again. If you need a torque wrench to change your oil you have no business owning a motorcycle.:)

I run full syn. in everything I own... Why wouldnt you use something that is proven to be superior in many ways. "Twice as expensive".. Sorry the extra 12$ is cheap insurance to me.
