Seriously, there are a million different opinions on the matter.

I have 4 qts of Valvoline sitting here along with a new filter.

I'm sure it's ok to run in the swing arm but would like to know if it's ok in the primary and why or why not?

Short answer is clutches need friction to grab and make the bike move. Engine oil is made to fight any form of friction.

So wtf should I run in the primary? I only have an Advanced Auto store nearby so what would they have?

I'm going to run the valvoline in the swing arm.

This is so annoying.

I have read about people using automatic transmission fluid in their primaries with good results. If you have to that may be the route to go.

So any motorcycle specific oil in the primary is ok? There's no contact between swing arm & primary oils, correct?

No contact between the two, If it were me I would look up the brand you buy. I know the catrol 4stroke motorcycle oil is rated for wet clutch systems.

The reason ATF fluid can be used is because auto transmissions use similar type clutches that are activated using hydraulic pressure.

Most people steer away from standard Automobile oil because cars do not rev as high or as quickly as these motorcycles do. Will it hurt the engine I honestly dont know, aircooled performance vw engines run standard car engine oil with no problems again not revving as high but generally get hotter than these v-twins.

So standard auto oil in the swingarm use at your own risk. But I would absolutely not run it in the primary.

The Advance Auto near me has a piss poor selection. I'll go there tomorrow and see what they have.

If I use motorcycle specific oil, is 10w40 ok? And I s 20w50 ok?

We could all benefit from some CLARITY on this subject.

Same here I think the store near me carries maybe 3 bottles at a time. 20w50 is standard for these bikes. There are people on this forum that run 10w40 in their bikes. Are you in a cold climate? In warm weather I would not use 10w40

Use any one of the following in the primary:
- a JASO MA certified 20w50 motorcycle engine oil (incl Amsoil,Mobil1 & Rotella)
- 80w90 gear oil that's specifically safe for wet clutches & soft yellow metals
- ATF
- HD Formula+ (per manufacturer's recommendations)
Within these options, pick the one that makes you feel the best about yourself. :D

Call me crazy... but think if your looking for some good oil and none available where your at, I'd prob place an order through the guy selling AMS oil on hear! Great oil at a really reasonabe price. Can't remember his name, figured it would have been mentioned already. Save the running around and cheaping out on the stuff noone uses! just a thought? Good luck with whatever you decide! -Arthur-
