So I purchased my bike from a repo dealer, my bike a 2007 xb12r 1900 miles, looked great. I took it to HD in Fenton MO and they done thier inspection and said nothing but nice things. The guy asked for the sellers # just in case I didnt buy it!
Issues:
1. Blown belt, why/ because the swing arm was bent 1/2 throwing everything off.
2. Top engine mount was bent out of place.
3. Axel was jacked up, and bearings were junked out.
4. About a half dozen missing important bolts.
I didnt pay much for it but I think I will be droping another $500.oo when all is said and done.
Should I call HD headquarters throw a fit and try to get my money back or would these things have been an easy miss???? Thanks Buellers. Lucky delta, anrkizm95, and thumpin1203 gave me the hook up. Thanks guys!

a qualified tech should have caught these things.a low level tech should have caught at least one or two of these problems.i would call the service manager and let him know.ask for your money back.im not a bike tech but i am an auto tech. we always look for sighns of being wrecked when doing a pre buy inspection.im sure the manager or owner would like to know about this problem.if you had been hurt or killed because of something they missed it would have come back on them.maybe you can get them to get you the parts you need at cost.

did you get a written report or a verbal only? if you got something in writting say they inspected it and found it good, then you can probably talk tot he manager and express your concern at their lack of knowledge and proficient service... but if you only got a verbal, then i would suggest it is all going to be in vein and its a learning curve. to have missed the details you say would suggest they didnt look at it for much or very long.

(twoguns) I have a slip of paper with their 43 point inspection that have almost all my issues checked over. I also have my recipt for a one hour charge $90.oo!
(d-adams) Everything on the bike is fixed as of today, I sanded all the plastic down and fixed all the scuffs and scratches. She's ready for paint!I am going to post all of my paint and progress in a thread soon! I have been wanting a Buell for a long time and I am not giving it up just yet ;)thanks for the offer.
Ill be trying to get my money back at-least! Thanks.

then i would be in their office the next working day they are open then. show them their lack of knowledge and your disatisfaction to their report, and chase some compensation. you have every right if they looked it over and failed you. even just to save their own reputation they should be doing something for you.

Thats probably what Ill do then. Thankfully the HD shop in Lebanon MO has been nothing but excellent service (very cool guys) They showed me all the crap that the Fenton HD missed.

So... how much do you want for it then?

J/K, looks like you've got something to play with for a while. I'm doing some casual browsing for an XB on the cheap. I don't really care if it's rashed up or even not running, provided it's not an engine with a hole through the cases. If I had my choices, it will be a xb12 firebolt, but it really doesn't matter much. I just need a test bike to keep for fitting up exhaust systems to it. I've got a temp loaner for the rest of the winter, but I'm going to want my own soon.

Me, I'd be thinking that it cost $90 to find out which one is the shop I want to keep going to.

That's almost worth the price of admission right there. What I read in these forums tells me that good shops are hard to find.

I've seen some interesting mechanic work in some shops and, thirty years later, they are not any better.

Here's a method a buddy showed me that I use for these kinds of decisions: take my hourly wage and, since I'm now doing something I don't want to do (which makes it "work" outside my work hours) make it my overtime wage. Now, at the overtime rate, am I likely to make that money back? For me, another trip out there, travel time and arguing time, just doesn't seem worth it (I'd already allow at least $50 for finding out the better shop).

I don't even know if I would waste time on a phone call but maybe: call the manager, or email (which is a record keeping system) and tell them. Calmly. Then say you'd like to give them a chance to make it good. See what they say but, really, do you want their monkeyboys working on your bike… ever?

When I used to spin wrenches for a living on bikes, my best customers were the one's that knew what was going on. I took the time to explain what was broke or needed repairs. Probably 90% of the time or more, they would do what I suggested. Very few would turn down the advice and one or two took their bikes home to try fixing it themselves. Those bikes usually came back in worse shape than when they left.
Knowing your limitations and being well informed about what's going on with your bike makes it much easier to figure out what you need to get done and if you should even bother with fixing it yourself. Me, I'll probably _always_ fix my own stuff, the exception being if it's a warranty problem. I do my own maintenance, tire changes, oil, valve checks, pretty much everything. It would have to be a pretty crappy day in my garage for me to take the bike to someone else to fix it. I can't remember the last time I did that either, but I'm pretty sure it was well over 25 years ago.

One thing to remember, there's no stupid questions, except for the one you don't ask.

Yea I would go to Surdyke and talk to them and if they don't work with you then report them to the BBB

I would go straight back to the dealer and ask them what all an Inspection is for? Then ask them if they stand behind their inspections. Then tell them you want a reimbursement at the very least since your $90, 43 Inspection failed to see 4 Important factors that could have lead to even more damages or possibly an injury through a crash.

The inspection serves a purpose and if they are IMO just charging you money to say "All Good," is straight stealing. [smirk] Otherwise yes you were screwed!

Thanks guys! I will be putting my [mad] face on!
o hey (d-adams) how about 15 grand!!!! :) then Ill buy you another one too??? LMK LOL
