I am in the process of doing a tail chop. I want to also paint the side rails and fairing mount black. I would like to paint my primary cover and timing covers to match. My question is can I just drain the oil and take these off or is there more to it? I don’t want to get in over my head but I don’t really like the stock tan color they used. Thanks for the help and info... I promise to post pics when done.

u'll have to remove the gear shifter; clutch cable, primary chain adjuster for the primary cover and the u'll have to tap out the rivets on the timing cover and remove the wires inside and then take it off

I have an 08, I dont mean the little round piece but the whole right side engine cover.

you also run the risk of the cams falling out if you remove the timing cover. they arent that hard to realign though. just tedious. one of the cams is attached to the cam cover so remove the bolt under the cam position sensor before pulling the cover off. be sure to scribe the location of the cps before removing though.

The part I am worried about is circled below, can I just take this cover off or will stuff fall out? I know its stupid but please help. also what type of paint are people using on the chin cowel that is lasting?

i told you what will happen if you remove that cover, do you not believe me or something? the timing cover is also known as the gear cover.

i used krylon fusion on the chin cowl and it is holding up very well. i also put a clear over it

Its not that I didnt believe you, I just thought you were still talking about the little round timing cover on the older models. Thanks for all the info!

i guess i could have been more clear on that. and yea im not sure on the arrangement of the cam position sensor in those models but i do know that the main cover still holds the cams in place.

If I take the cover off can I just tape it in place or is it gonna be a big mess? I am just worried about getting in over my head.

Theres some Wrinkle finish Paint that is in many shops Including the Dealer. I just bought for My XB12R-08- my front Chin Fairing in Black and drilled out the Rivets. Looks Better. Cheaper and is molded in color. The Oil Pump Slash/ Timing Cover/ Cams need to be marked. A Sharpie does ok.Also you need to be careful of the push rods so as they don't slip out of place.Masking and cleaning and spraying the wrinkle paint or your choice is a Good option if you aren't into what I do nearly every day. Plus it is less expensive. You will still need to Retouch from time to time. But that is just the way Heat does. ME I put the 2009 Black Primary & the Black Oil Pump complete on the Bike and it does look sharp. I was putting new cams/lifters and some other goodies in as well so Take your Time and you will do fine. Check a manual if you need to.~Jimi
