There is a 02 white lightening at a local dealer that he took in on trade, it has 13,000 miles and seems to be in good working shape, starts real good and the gears shift smooth. We own 2 yamaha fz1's and a kawasaki concours but my husband really likes the sound of the x1. We do our own maintenece on the other bikes such as fork seal replacement, carbuerator sync and rejet plus the usual pm but we have read some stuff about the x1 that you have to work on it more than ride is so my question is...how reliable are they and what typicaly fails the most and how costly is the repair if we do it?

I am sorry that I cannot really answer your question. Having said that, Most of the people on this particular forum ride the '03 and later models (XB models)There are a few on here who may be able to help, but a larger percentage of the tube frame owners are members on Badweb (www.badweatherbikers.com). You may have some more luck getting a quick answer through them.

however, don't discount this site as there is still plenty of knowledge to be had. I know there are a few people here who do own pre-fuell in frame models, and may be able to help. I figured your post could use a bump to the top of the page to get more attention.

My friends got an x1 and has had more maitenance than he would like done with it, but its a great bike, many others will tell you they are great as well!

It really comes down to the previous owner,if they took care of it or just rode the crap out of it. I'm the 3rd owner my 98 S3 I got it with 4500 on the clock now it's got around 25000 on it. The only thing I've done so far is normal pm stuff (pads, tires, oil).

As far as working on them it's pretty much like working on a dirtbike nothing to complicated.

I am pretty sure he took care of it, it is coming with some extras like brake pads and it looks pristine with everything in working order as far as I can tell. The dealer wants 2900.00 for it and everything looks clean, seat, guages, plastics, all fluids look good.

i ride a 99 X1... first year of the X1. I have had very few issue with it and absolutely love it to death. 02 is probably the best X1 to own, all the problems and updates were addressed by then. I say go for it. They are a blast to ride. Im keeping mine forever.

not trying to promote competing forums or anything but, there seems to be alot more from the olde community over at buelletinboard They will be able to give you some good advice I'm sure.
