Has anyone ever tried this stuff?Gear OilIt came up as a suggestion on Amazon and is something that I havent ever seen talked about here.

thats gear oil. XB/HD motors use 20W-50 and nothing else. Same thing in the engine and primary. Check your manuals.

75w-90 can be and has been used in Sportsters ever since the dawn of the EVO. It works just fine. Since the XB engine is nothing more than Harleys turd perfected there is no reason it can't be used in a Buell.

If you go strictly by the manual you'll never run anything other than Harley Davidson(tm)oil in the motor and Sportrans(tm) in the primary. You'll pay out the nose for no real benifit too.

That being said, I run 20W50 synthetic bike oil in the trans (because I know it works, the clutch is happy and I like the shift feel with it) and 15w50 "car" oil in the engine (again, cause I know it works). I purposely ommitted the brands as we have PLENTY of "which oil is best" BS threads already.

Page 61 in my owners manual list 10W/40 first, then 20W/50 :) Regardless, you definitely want motor oil in the primary not gear oil.

Gear oil will work just fine as long as it has a friction modifier for the clutch to operate correctly. All synthetic I know of come with it, but the non synthetics need to have it added seperately.. my 2 cents worth

And I'm pretty sure this one does not have it. VTwin Syns are different than regular Syns, we've debated this on this board many times and even though I used to use regular Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec the jury convinced me that that additives in motorcycle and or Vtwin specific oil are different. So even a stubborn ass like myself changed my mind. It didn't hurt that O'Reily's down the street carried it too :D

Not trying to start a debate here just stating a fact. The fact is that the viscocity of 20w50 motor oil and 75w90 gear oil are very similar (2 different scales) and h-d at one time used gear oil in the primary of which these engines are designed from. Either one will get the job done its personal preference. The question is which one do you want to use? Just make sure the one you choose has the right additives for clutch operation.
