I did the DIY cheesesgrater removal about 4 months ago and could not be happier with the results, with one exception. As the weeks passed after I completed the mod I began to notice chips in the paint from road debris being flung into it on the underside of the tail section, particularly in the area directly below the tail light. So there are two solutions, the first would be to move the license plate in such a way that it shields the tail section from debris, or you could do what I did. I was perfectly happy with the location of my license plate so relocating it was not an option, so my solution to this problem to simply spray the vulnerable areas with a truck bed lining material.
Note: Only works if your tail section is Black
Transition between the Black paint and truck bed lining material "paint on top, bed lining material on bottom"
This is the stuff I used, well the bed lining material anyways. But If you are interested the picture bellow shows everything needed to do my Brake light Housing mod.
