Removing "X" from xbsx airbox cover

I think there's a thread about this that I read in the past and i just can. not. find. it.

I discovered my bike had a cherry bomb airbox and flyscreen painted black by PO and stripped the paint off it and sanded it with middling results, but now the front two bolt holes are cracking more and more (the left front side needs a fender washer to even hit the shouldered bolt at this point) and I want to just buy a new one, I think (it also has hotglue residue on the inside that is now visible from the outside, etc). The only NOS i can find are City X and I don't want the X bit.

Anyone done this?

Alternatively if anyone knows of a source for non-CityX cherrybomb airbox top, let me know.

I've never removed one myself, but they cant be too hard. Warm it up with a hair dryer or even leave it out in the sun, carefully peel it off, might get under it with some fishing line to "saw" it off. Getting the X off is the easy part, then you have to remove the excess adhesive. Peel off what as much as you can by hand and then use a soft cloth and a mild solvent like wax and grease remover or 3m adhesive remover to soften the glue. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong on the adhesive remover, i do know you've got to stay away from things like thinner and acetone on the translucent plastic, they'll damage it. When you're done you'll probably need to polish the airbox a bit from the scratches you'll put in it removing the glue. Tons of threads on polishing translucents.

SIR: several online sources now saying ALL cherry bomb air box covers are NLA meaning "no longer available" or obsolete. they are NOT. this list i compiled should have been a "sticky" on here years ago. pick out the cherry bomb cover of interest and have your local dealer run the part # and order if available. attempting to fix holes and repair cracks on transluscent covers complete waste of time and effort.

Only way to stop the cracks from going further is to drill a hole at the end of the crack ! Kind of defeats the purpose in this case but it will stop the cracks from getting worse. You could then sand the underside and apply some epoxy with a none cotton type gauze bridging the crack 50% on each side, also put some type of crazy glue in the crack before applying the epoxy. There are other steps to ensure success but, they would make the cover look like crap and not worth doing t at all. Then you could look around for a new one and, keep the repaired one as a spare.
