Well, NY has outlived it usefulness.
On top of insane taxes, diminishing quality of schools, and just plain ****** weather, the wife and I are relocating...somewhere.
First on our list is Midlothian VA, a suburb of Richmond.
If anyone from/around/near the area can send a 411 on the area, we'd appreciate it. Were heading down the 16th for a week or so to get the lay, but you cant assess the yearly in one week. I'm studying the VA DMV rules, kinda curious how LEO's treat us.

So good/bad/indifferent, please chime in.

Thanks

Hey man - i live in richmond and have been here since 07. Great area to live, i'm in the city but would love to get out. Again, its a great area but living in richmond proper kinda sucks - city hall is a joke, housing prices are outrageously overblown, etc. but any of the burbs are great. Midlo wouldnt be my first choice personally but you may differ. While your here check out Hanover county/Mechanicsville area. Western henrico is a bit more crowded than midlo (chesterfield co.) but it might be worth a look. Virginia is a very motorcycle friendly commonwealth. Richmond is only about 3 hours from the NC Outer Banks (best beaches north of the tropics) and two hours from the incomparable Shenandoah Valley (awesome rides up there). DC is two hrs north. Richmond has the conveniences of a mid-size metro area (pop. near 1 mil including surrounding counties) but it is where southern hospitality truly starts. Let me know if there are any more specifics I might can answer. Anything to help a fellow Bueller.

As for LEOs around here - you can get away with anything short of murder in Richmond City. The counties.... not so much. Midlothian is in Chesterfield County aka Arrestafield County. Hanover is supposedly even worse BUT that being said - if you keep your nose clean your fine. They primarily focus on popping folks that fit the profile of possible drug possessors, DUI suspects and the like.

Pagano,
I'm glad you got a quick response from mtnmason who lives in the area you are truely interested in. I live in Lynchburg, VA, which is about an hour and fifteen minutes southwest of Richmond. I moved down here with my family in 1998 from Allentown, PA. I don't know too much about the Richmond area, but Lynchburg and surrounding countys have been pretty much untouched through the downturn in the economy. Don't get me wrong, new housing came to a standstill and companies weren't hiring, but there was little or no layoffs by major employers. I don't know what you do for a living so I can't say you will find what you are looking for here.
I can't say enough about how beautiful this area is. Just east of the Blueridge Mountians the views are fantastic, four true seasons though the winters tend to be mild, and the George Washington National Forest & the Blueridge Parkway are just 15 minutes west. Great schools and reasonable taxes are a plus also.
If you have the time when you are down this way, don't hesitate to give me a call. I would be more than happy to show you around and answer any questions you may have. My number is in my profile.
Take care and good luck,
Raz
