I found a guy that has a seized xb9sx, that is looking to trade for a motorcycle I have, and was wondering if this would be worth it. I don't have any more info on his bike, but wanted to know if there were any of you that have installed a 1200 conversion like the sportster guys? Any info would be helpful, I should be talking to him hopefully tomorrow.

I know a guy here that did a 9 to 12 conversion. And as far a i know as long as you have all the parts its a direct swap.

you can either exchange the engine with a 12, or build one from your current engine.
you will need to bore out the seats, then.

advantage? high rpm range with the conversion...;)

any idea what the parts total would be? I've been looking around, and saw a post on a sporster forum saying it was like $500.00 for the parts. I wasn't really looking to get into a super project, but remember some guys from work that had sportsters saying it wasn't a big deal to do their conversions. I just don't know enough about the engine differences between the sportster, and xb. I will look them up, so there is no need for detailed lists here. Are the parts basically just high performance versions of sportster parts, rather that being of a completely incompatible?

Ok, I just talked to the guy, (super nice guy) and the story goes; He was riding down the fwy on a hot day, and the engine just stopped. The bike has 18,000 miles. He took it to the shop, and they said the oil pump quit, and the engine was a total loss. The seller said that he had located a couple 1200 engines that ranged from $1200 to $1500. So that would put the deal at about $3200. Not bad, but doesn't include shipping or time to install, which shouldn't be more than a weekend I guess.

keep in mind there are bikes selling already running for about $3200. You may want to seriously talk him down more or hope for a doner motor from a totaled bike. i would make him come down another $400 to compinsate labor. You couyld run into several other problems while doing the conversion, so expect the worst and hope for the best. im not trying to scare you i just want you to succede. good luck!!!! Post pics when you get it. Before and After!

you will need: 12 motor, 12 ecm,and I would assume 12 exhaust and servo unless you went after market? the plugs, wires, coil, injectors and all that are the same.

Brightbuell, you are right, you are not scaring me, you are just so right about the potential pitfalls. I just saw the bike on CL, and it looked so so good. I guess my desire to get one cheap was trumping my practical side that knows you get what you pay for. I went down to my local HD dealer, and they didn't really have anything to help, but talking to another shop owner, basically said the same thing, 1500 for basically a roller was a bit too much. He also is speculating that the 18k on the bike may have been a rough and neglected amount of miles, I'm not sure about that, since the owner was using it to commute from orange county to san diego. I was impressed at choosing such a mount for that commute, the guy has more perserverance than I would. If I had to commute that far, I would surely choose something with wind protection, but I guess that is what happens when you get older, or perhaps I'm just a wimp. hmmmmmm yeah, it's the latter....
Anyway the independent shop owner said it could run as high a 4 grand to do the motor. That was a worst case scenario, and included the 1200 displacement, along with cleaning up the ports, and doing a valve job. Basically just your standard performance build. It sure sounds great, but It just isn't in the cards right now. I think I'm going to have to clear out a couple toys that I have been reluctant to let go of if I am going to move on another bike. My wife is already ready to make me sleep out in the garage. (even when I am behaved)

hey, it me the guy selling it i just got a 1203 engine withe all the parts i need. So iam going to take it off of CL. thanks for you and time good luck.

you need the 1050 kit from NRHS performance! makes KILLER power! if i had a 9 instead of a 12 mine would have one... the it is $700 and then minor odds and ends you will want to change while the motor is apart...

honestly in my opinion id rather re-build the 9 than put in a 12... i have a 12 with a 1250 kit and a buddy had a 99 stock motor just tuned an pipe/K&N and that stuff and his makes just as much power as mine.... and also revs quicker and higher...

I was looking into the 1050 kit for my 9. So you definitly think its worth it? I got to pull my motor apart anyways to change gaskets cause i got an oil leak. I was talking to someone else on here and they said it only made about 10 more horsepower but I guess combined with a pipe, filter, and remap it would probley be alot better. A 12 only makes 10-15 more horsepower than a 9 anyways so it might be worth it over swaping to a 12 motor.

Will I need a new ecm or anything to put on the 1200 kit?
And will it work the shop told me the engine eat it's self up

i got a 03 xb9 motor that i was gonna take apart and sell, has 6,800 miles. i would sell it whole or part it, if your interested pm me.

Hey I'm really glad to hear you are able to get your bike back together. I really would like to have a buell, but it's your baby, and you should be riding it. Good luck with the rebuild. keep this thread updated, I would like to go for a ride some time once it is all done.

I know when I blow up my 9 or if I find a 9 engine for dirt cheap. I'm going to put in the 1050 big bore kit. I was told by Twin motorcycles that they make more power then the 12 and are faster. I have an email of the guy tell me this I'll post it later but for know I have to go to work. Going to do more homework before I buy it. I wanna make sure he's right. Also heared something about 1650? not sure if thats right but if so hell yeah.. :D[up]
