could somebody please advise me..
my 2004 xb12s doesnt start. the battery is good everything is normal up to the point when i press the start button. the starter makes a loud clicking noise in quick repetition, but does not turn the engine. i assume the problem is with the starter and i would like to know if this is something i could fix easy or the whole thing has to be replaced? any help is appreciated

check voltage at both starter wires while trying to crank it should be 12 volts at both.if you have proper voltage replace the starter.if you dont have voltage to the smaller wire while cranking remove the smaller wire and test again.if you have voltage to the smaller wire with it disconnected replace the starter.if you have no voltage to the smaller wire with it disconnected swap the starter relay for another one if you still have nothing take the start button apart and clean the contacts.

1. not battery check, you need to LOAD test. It's a different test. Don't buy anything until you've done this.

2. If click comes from under seat, relay works.

3. If click comes from above front pulley, solenoid works. No click: replace relay or check green wire under starter relay (relays are marked on fuse box lid).

A "good" battery can get both of these to click but not enough to turn the engine.

thanks everybody for all the info, this is a great site!
ill try those and will let you know the outcome

A Starter Alternator Shop can rebuild. It's just a Chrysler mimi van starter,I forget what year. Please check All the Grounds then the Relay for the starter. Also sometimes the Battery needs to be removed if it's older than 2 and a Half years old.Have it [load] Checked at a Good Auto supply. This way you are sure on Starting power. It's Rare but I have Seen and Replaced the Starter Button assembly by the Throttle Tube when that happens. So check it all out before you spend that kind of money on a starter.*Jimi

so im 99% i have to pull out the starter, according to the big book if starter spins but does not engage, i have to replace the demaged idler gear and armature.:(
has anyone done this before? how difficult is it?
also i've found a website (Rare Electrical)where they sell starters for Harleys, i found one for Harley Davidson sportster for $90 (new) according to the seller it works for buell aswell, but i just wanted to double check before buying it. does anyone know if it would really work?
also i swaped my handlebar, so now i have a Crossroads sport handlebar for sale. if anyone interested, let me know.

Yes some of the sporsters parts will bolt right on to the Bike. The Buells share many parts in the Transmision and around the Bike. The Starter is nearly the same as a Chrysler Mini Van internally.I forget what years. Most likely close to the same as when the first Buells in the 2000 and up along with Sporsters. If your Starter Spins but doesn't Enguage the Flywheel, usually theClutch sub assembly Spring and plunger assembly is weak.Possible Solenoid. The Armature should be fine cause it turns over.Check with a Starter Alt., shop and have it bench tested.*Jimi
