I'm thinking of picking up a cheap, small dirt bike for the wife and I to screw around on. Might get two. I found a Baja 150 with a broken kick start spring. I know many think Baja is a POS but I can't afford a great bike right now, and I know a guy with one and it's actually not too bad, and he hasn't had issues getting some parts. I'm new to dirt bikes, not sure what's involved in replacing a kick start spring. Any ideas on how involved it is? I googled it and some people say complete tear down of the engine...

****... i have a baja 50 and it is the best 100$ ive spent in a LONG time. Also is super easy to fix and work on since its so small.

Any of my friends who see how ugly it is and rides it, wants to buy one or buy mine cause they love it so much.

I have an '83 Honda CR480R...big single bore 2stroke! Hawls ASS! LOL I probably have $600 total invested. I aslo rebuilt the top end with a new wiseco piston. I dunno how much you are looking to spend, but craigslist is full of bikes for very reasonable. IMO look for a yamaha, suzuki, honda, kawasaki 125cc or 250cc 2 stoke. Super simple to work on and parts are cheap. A few months ago I was lookin and found a mid 90's Suzuki RM250 was super clean for like $1000.

I'm looking at $500ish, maybe more depending on what it is. I know that's not a lot but looking to maybe get something that needs a little work.

My father in law has a Baja 50cc kids bike and it is a blast and seems to run great. Bought it used and has had it like 2 years starts right up every time.

Anyone know if it's easy or hard to replace the kick start mechanism? I've never worked on one. If it's easy I'll prob buy that Baja 150 for $400(or less if possible). Seems like a good deal the bike almost looks new.

After riding it she wants one, that's what started all of this lol.

In the last two years I've prob. put about 2-3 hrs. on my Rmz250 and prob. 100 hours on this...

If you are spending about $500 and want a little pit bike my best advice would be an xr 70. Throw some high bars on it and ride it forever. Other options would be xr100 kx 65 stuff like that. Small bikes that have balls but are comfortable enough for adults to ride.

I just sold this for 600 .. really needed the money cuz I'm only starting to work again next week

92 CR125 with a fresh top end and fresh plastics. Plus a few other goodies. Be patient, these deals do come up.

That's awesome! I also have a 92 CR125 and the thing is an absolute hoot! I'm not really sure what all's been done to it but it flat out hauls! When that thing hits its power band it pulls the front wheel off of the ground in 6th if I'm not sitting right up on the tank! The first few gears are EASY wheelies!:D HUGE grin factor. In fact, I'm nearly convinced that a dirtbike is just about as much fun as you can possibly have on 2 wheels. :D

To the OP:
If you're just going to be running around the yard and screwing around the Baja will do just fine, even if you "play" a little rough. If you find yourself wanting to get more than 12" if air under your tires very often or plan on REALLY thrashing it, invest in a Japanese bike. They are nearly bomb-proof and the smaller (sub 200cc) Japanese bikes can be had for a pretty good price, if you can wait on a deal to show up.[up]

Thanks for all the info guys. We wouldn't be getting any air lol. Just riding around. Partially to help my wife learn to ride.

Don't underestimate the amount of fun to be had when the tires are off of terra-firma. :D

Dirtbikes are GREAT tools for learning to ride. Their easy to operate, able to take a drop and dirt is more forgiving than asphalt.[up]
It's how I started. It's how I taught my wife the basics before she took her MSF class. It's how I plan on intrducing my kids to it (alread have a Yamaha PW50 for the little guys). The Baja should fit the bill quite nicely for you.

I can't decide if this Baja 150 is worth it. Guy wants $400, needs a front tire tube, and the kick start is broken. No electric start(which would be fine if I could kick start it...). The bike looks brand new otherwise. I don't know what's involved in fixing the kick start and can't find much useful info online so far...

I know, I love the powerband on a 125 2T .. I've rode a 250 2T as well as a 450 4T bikes and while they're crazy powerful, just didn't seem as fun. The 125 just loves to get thrashed.

Srusnak, I wouldn't pay 400 for the Baja. A buddy of mine bought an almost new baja 250x for 650. Nothing at all wrong with it. I'd keep looking :)

There are to many local bikes on CL that are a better quality and don't need anything but a rider for not much more. I would do what I told you via email. Maybe others will chime in on what I recommended. "ttr 125 for a beginner bike for wife plus you could ride too. Not to big or small and not fast so easy to learn."

First and foremost make sure you have somewhere to ride!
Like I told you Orlando doesn't have many places to ride reason I sold my RM 250.

i to am thinking about getting a dirt bike in the somewhat near future, i'm in the USCG and am stationed about 15 minutes from Land between the Lakes in TN and KY, some of the guys at base have dirt bikes and quads, and always go out and have fun riding the trails at the park. I was thinking about a 125-250cc bike of any of the big four brands really.......

Yup, it practically begs you to turn the throttle to the stop and ride it mercilessly.
I happily oblige. :D

Yeah I do understand I just haven't found much on CL that looks worth while. I haven't looked very hard yet though. I'm just sort of keeping an eye out. Guess I'll pass on the baja if better brands in good shape are going about the same price.
