Service Manual says that Locktite thread sealant has to be used on the oil drain plug - haven't been able to find it yet, but a local hardware store has Permatex High Temperature one - can it be used instead? Thanks!

There are alot of different grades of threadlocker and sealer. Does the manual specify a grade? Loctite and Permatex are just different brands that have competitive product lines (Charmin vs. Bounty :D ). Chances are they both have a product that will work fine for you.

I special ordered the Loctite 565 from Advance Auto Parts, and they got it for me in one day. The tube should last a lifetime!

There are a couple of references in the manual to using purple Loctite.

Most of the shop manual references will tell you either red or blue Loctite. There are also a few references to purple Loctite, a type I've never seen, except when browsing on the web for it.

The colors denote the strength of the "lock." Purple is lowest, then blue, then red. I think there are even others, but not used so much. Permatex and Loctite are basically the same, and I think if you surf online you can find charts to cross reference.

I have never put anything on mine :) Holds oil like a champ. If I noticed it leaking...then I would probably do something about it. Till then [up]

Must be purple. Blue and Red are not thread sealants, they are thread lockers. Purple must be the weakest of all.

As for ordering it online - shipping to Canada is ridiculous - $20 for a tube that cost under $10, hence I am looking for a similar product available locally.

As for Permatex - it has two types of thread sealant - high temp and heavy application - what does it say on the package of Loctite 565 - heavy temp I suppose?

Thanks!

I don't use any and have never had a drop leak. Don't use red, sometimes you can't break stuff loose with that in it.

Thanks a lot Jerryme, appreciate that, but I think I will just get a high temp thread sealant (not thread locker) by Permatex from the local hardware store. I am sure others are right and it wouldn't leak even without it, but I will just go by the book.

The correct stuff is white. It's a sealer, not a thread locker. It's kind of like using teflon tape on threaded brake line fittings. I imagine the Permatex stuff would be fine, and high temp can't hurt.
