I took my bike out of winter storage,( 09' lightning xb9sx) and it was running poorly. So I changed the gas, and the oil, and added some fuel injector cleaner. After a test ride, the throttle is acting funny. When I pull it, it takes a lot longer to get a response out of it than last summer. I pull back, and get a delay, instead of the instant power im used to. So when I go to take off, i have to really rev it up just to get going, and it still isnt full power, even with it really pulled back, more like a stuttering choke. When Im in around third, and I pull back to get the power I need to, say change lanes or move out of the way of an idiot on the phone, it putters and doesnt rev up like it should.
I just did the TPS reset for bikes younger than 08, and it seems to help at idle, but after a short test ride, no glory.
Ive checked the plugs and they seem to have the usual amout of black on them, not gummy or anything... The only thing I havent checked is fuel injectors...

Which is my next question, anyone have some advice/walthrough on taking them out and cleaning them?

Does the 09' lightning xb9s have the valves in the exhaust can? If it does could these be stuck?

in this video you can see me pull the throttle and it kinda dies out before reving up... I hope someone has more know how than I.... please help, im itching for a ride!

I don't have the same problem on acceleration, but I was wondering if anyone else has a weird engine deceleration issue? For instance, when I'm cruising and the engine is nice and hot, when I get to a stoplight and pop the trans into neutral, the "idle" will be sitting around 2000-2500 rpms for maybe 30 seconds before it finally settles around 500-1000 rpm or so. Is this some sort of thermal management thing that the ecm does on its own, or do I have an issue with my bike? It sure is annoying.

only the xb 12's have the exhaust valves. first reset your idle speed to corect idle speed after you reset tps, (me i would reset tps again and set the idle speeed to proper rpm then go on to checking other possible causes)
wow that sounds bad , iwould start with easy things like exhaust leak(maybe header gaskets or loose header), intake leak, badly fouled plug or miss firing or bad igntion coil(follow the dianoctics flow chart for igniton coil in the service manuals), checkthe air intake temp sensor (probably not it but could be slight problem)to see if its not caked in oil or conections loose. most common seems to fouled plugs and ignition coil. if not the plugs are probably fouled bad by now running it like that.

jmcrutch, I think its the bike doing its thing. Mine used to do that to. Its staying in high revs so your takeoff is faster. And once you have been idling long enough, it slows the engine down. Does it only do it in neutral? What about just pulling the clutch in but staying in first?

nativeX-- thanks for the input. Im gonna check the plugs again, like you said, they may have become more fouled. As far as leaks I dont think its that, its a brand new bike, but ill check those too :( Im not sure how to check the ignition coil, and I lost my owners manual when I moved... thanks for the input, Ill repost tomm when I get a chance to check her out...

service manuals at top of page. the diagnostics for the ignition coil and more are all about the same for all xb 12' & 9's. the xb9 service manual link seems to work more often though, check for engine codes with jumper method described in manuls to check for engine codes (trouble codes list in manul section 4.8)see section 4.23 for ignigtion coils diagnostics and and diagnostics flow chart.

Native,
Awsome info, thanks a bunch. Im gonna look it up and check the blink code. And Ill go from there. thanks again!

Well, I checked the blink code using the jumper method and watching the check engine light. I got a 13, wich is the code for 02 sensor. LAME! It takes soooo much to get that sucker out! I just dont have the equipment to do this myself... AND from what I read in the manual, you need a special tool to get it out... Guess Ill call harly and get an estimate.

Thanks to this fourum (I love this place), I know what the issue is, and can get them to fix it directly and clear the fault code (which I couldnt do myself even if I could change the 02 sensor), without all the trouble shooting and BS associated with the stealership...

bluelightning,

My bike maintains its high RPM's whether neutral or just by pulling in the clutch lever while still in gear. I always assumed that it was a thermal management operation to maybe prevent the still-hot pistons from interfering with the air-cooled block, but wanted to see if anyone else experienced the same thing. I guess I'll try a TPS reset and see if that changes anything.

What's the year/model of your bike?

Edit: If it's an '07 or older bike, you just need to adjust the idle as close to 1000 rpm as possible. Having the idle set too high causes the RPM's to "hang", even after releasing the throttle.

Hey Guys,

My story is similar, I have a XB12r, after I ride for about a good hour when the bike is nice and hot. my bikes idles high, up around the 2rpm range. The only way I can lower the idle is when I drop back in to first gear, my other issue this happened to me yesterday, I was riding on the highway trying to pass car so I picked up more speed and then it started to putter. so then I pulled over revved it to see what it would do, when I revved it pass 5rpms it would putter with a pop. But the motor is strong. it doesn't knock or have any other sound. it runs fine, just when I rev it pass 5rpms its putter and pops any ideas?
