Where do I get one of these???

HD-46285

I assume that any forum members here who have split their cases and did transmission work either had access to one, have one or have a work around.

I'll take any suggestions.

Another bump..
Has anyone ever done the tranny on an XB?
If so, did you use a press for the mainshaft and the countershaft or did you just bang them in with a dead blow hammer? I can't find anybody who has that special HD removal/installation jig that you use with an arbor press.

I guess I will bring the tranny and the side of the engine case down to the local machine shop to see what they say.

are there any motorcycle shops near you? im in the same situation and was going to split the case but i know there is a v-twin guy in town that does real good work. he said ~500 with parts to split the case (thats me bringing him the engine with jugs removed) and change all the trans and crank bearings. plus he can do little things like lap the case halves together. he is setup to do engine work, and while im sure i could take it apart and get it back together he will do a better job of it.

ps and by motorcycle shop i do NOT mean HD

Yea, there are independent shops around. I was just asking to save some money. I like to do the work myself.

i understand that, and i usually feel the same way. figured 500 was worth it for me to let a professional do it. he has access to some specialized equipment that i dont. im still taking the whole top end off and removing the engine myself. good luck to you. keep us updated how your project goes.

It is highly unlikely that any independent shop will have the Buell transmission fixture that the manual recommends, so they would be improvising just like you would have to.

You can always press the shafts in together but one at a time, pressing each shaft in a little at a time, alternating between them. The most important part is to press on the inner race of each bearing down on the shaft, being sure to not side load the bearing assemblies.

The main shaft will enter the bearing sooner than the counter shaft, so you can get it started and then worry about the counter shaft alignment. Both ends of both shafts are precision ground to fit properly in their respective bearings, so you never want to beat on them with anything that may deform the ends.

I have all my transmission parts finally. I am going to take the side of the case and the main and counter shafts to some local machine shops and inquire about having them pressed in. I suppose that after thats done I can install the shifter fork cam, fork tubes and forks, throw the crankshaft and pushrods back in, apply some case sealer and bolt the left and right sides of the motor together. I am looking forward to at least getting the bottom half of the motor done this weekend. Then its of to work on the upper end with new piston rings, valve stem seals and all new gaskets.
