My check engine light will come on and then go off for no reason with no changes in the the it runs. I shorted the #1 and #2 pins and got code 11, TPS. I have the EBR ECM but I would imagine it would be the same as the stock ECM for codes. Any ideas on why this would come on?

Code 11 on a stock ECM is set by the TPS signal falling out of the following ranges:

Closed throttle : .5-1.5 volts
Wide open throttle : 3.9-4.9 volts

Likely a connection or harness problem. If you have no driveability problems, ignore it :D

Have you Reset Throttle Position lately? Try to reset TPS first before you buy a sensor. All the Codes are correct Stock or other. Just use the 08+ Key turn procedure for TPS reset and see how it goes. Also check your battery terminals for clean and tightness as well. ALL bikes 08+ need to reset tps right at a fresh fill up or before. This is why Erik Buell had the development team come up with the Simple Key Turn TPS method.Theres the method on i believe Stevenc150 Threads from some of us Techs posting the solutions to help each other out. hope this helps.~Jimi*

a tps reset maps a tp degree range on a tp voltage range, and requires having read a tp voltage already. How shall a tps reset then cure a out of range tp voltage reading? that's utter nonsense.

I wil try a reset for sure. I do have the stock battery and it has never been on chrage with a tender. Is it possible that the battery may need to be replaced? That would give me a good excuse to buy the one from EBR.

08xb12r, you can always take the battery to auto parts store and have a load test done. Most batterys will last maybe two and a half years max on a well maintained Bike. Really depends on where you live on that subject as well. The Harley Battery seems to hold up pretty well. Here in my shop we have Battery Tenders and I usually get whichever mechanic is doing what I have assigned to their bay to install the fuse linked pigtail on the bike so they can at least maintain the battery. Most of the big Harleys that come in here don't get Ridden every day. If the bike sits just even a week you can plug in your Tender and keep the battery from starting to Sulfate, this will also keep you aware of any hidden drains on your Machine. If My Bikes sit more than 3 days I plug in and let it bring them up to full charge. The EBR Battery is very expensive and unless you just want one the Stock one does the job.The TPS on your 08 Firebolt will with the Key turn Method due to the newer Delphi 3 and ECM changes will automatically take the TP Sensor and reset all degrees/due to there is no idle screw. I use a computer with the Harley Davidson and Buell Direct Link Race & software and it works very well. I always show my Buell customers the Simple Key turn Method so they don't need to come in the shop for that. Some do like to see their Bike hooked up and have it explained, so I do that leave out all the Tech language so a person can understand and not feel like I'm trying to make them look Stupid. Not only is that bad for business it will impower them and most of the time they feel better cause me or my Techs took the time to do so. If you can't find it post me and I'll type it in for you. Thank Erik Buell for that stroke of genus for the 08+ bikes, it is simple and only takes about a minute done correctly.*Jimi

Thanks for all the replys. I pulled the code with the software from EBR and it says that the TPS is stuck open or stuck closed. I cleared the codes did the TPS reset and they came back. Not sure where to go from here. Will I need a new TPS?

08xb12r, it's possible that you may need one.Have you started or Ridden the bike since? How do you like the EBR tools and software? Is TPS pluged in good? Was wondering if there is wire chafing or residue around throttle blade or loose Throttle Position Sensor. Might want to check the cable wheel for binding & the return spring. The volts on the sensor is 3.86 volts at Wide Open Throttle. At closed throttle .33volts.With a digital volt ohm meter. If you are curious Plug the Velocity Stack and carefully unplug & remove the screws that hold the TPS sensor on and visually check the keeper on it.Might want to put a small hand towel or something under it just in case.Once you remove it or unplug it a TPS-reset will need to be done once reinstalled. *Jimi

and it says that the TPS is stuck open or stuck closed.

there is no such message in the pcm software. dtc 11 covers only tps voltages (too low/too high).

08xb12r, I know what you mean by your post.I'm not going to talk(type)like a jerk with corrections instead, because not EVERYONE works on bikes for a living. I get customers in here that explain best as they can.I know when they leave that I'm maybe going to chuckle,I never do that in front of them, unless they are, I know they did their best to tell me what is happening. I post where it's easy to understand,& help instead. So don't worry about being numbers or word correct. Now the 08+ Delphi-3 is (preprogramed) to automatically reset Throttle Position by use of the Key turn method & Twisting of the Throttle. This while cycling tells the Ecm to reset on 08+ Bikes and should keep you out of the shop for such a small fix.You can do it with a Computer,if you like. Erik Knew with HD cancelling (long before it was announced) his contract, this extra feature would save his bikes, also help with sales. He Knew Buells may not be Welcome in all Shops. Newer Ecm has advantages as well as disadvantages.Emissions & EPA choked down Buells.Hense in 2004 interactive valve in the Muffler.Along with the Crappy Fuel map to pass the Rules. The upgraded Epromm in Delphi-3 is better STILL a Crappy Map, with a program to let anyone reset TPS w/out a computer or Tool.Well your Key!There just isn't enough sensors to compensate for the varibles like your Vechicle.Erik kept it simple! The older Buells need a meter or a computer with Software whether it's a Hack program OR a bought off the shelf software. Sure all ECMs can be Hacked into and the Ecms aren't perfect but Cheaper to build and easier to Reprogram for upgrades that are being done to the Engine. You will always have to reset the Throttle Position on any Buell due to the Ecm on the bike. The Cycles per second processing the information are Not fast enough. Go ahead twist the Throttle. Just look around and we won't see any CBRs/Yamahas/etc having this problem.Depends on the year. Their Bikes electronics left this problem far behind. My 06 RVT 1000 RC51 V.Twin, has never had a glitch.Yes,I can use a jumper wire and the code will be right on the Cluster. When your Buell runs a little rough just reset TPS and GO.Whew!*Jimi
