been doing some reading, and found that some may think that the stator failures COULD be like linked to the voltage regulators overheating. i was thinking of mounting a fan over my VR. either an XB fan or some kind of computer fan. just curious if anyone has done this and if so do you have any pictures to share? i could be wrong about all this, but if it doesn't work the VR is staying cooler which isn't a bad thing. :)

I saw someone on badweb do this but the fix seems to be a mosfet regulator and a rewound stator from what I have read. I read just recently that suposedly HD has a updated stator coming out to fix the problem. Only time will tell I guess.

I just Recently Extended the Regulator out away from the front head. I Just went up to the Ace Hdwr. and Found the 3 bolts needed (pan top allens)about an Inch Long, also found the hollow 3/4 of an inch long round dowels. Roll pins will work also. Just slipped the aluminum dowel over the bolts and tightened . Had to buy an extra 2 allen wrenches cause the new allen was the right threads, but the black iron was all they had.I don't believe in just one wrench or bolt i get extra.I put some sealant on the extra threads and a piece of wiper hose to protect the regulator wires should the heat or vibration move anything around. Did the whole job for less 8 bucks. I can now say some air will get behind the Regulator.[cool]

I did this to the stock regulator months back.

In the heat or slower..traffic like riding...the subframe just isn't enough of a heat sink...as far as I'm concerned.
Working in the aerospace industry does this to a guy...!

I bought a computer power supply type high output fan.
I moved things around a bit and just set the fan essentually on top of the regulator, so it blows air down three of the four side of the regulator.
It's high enough above the reg. to have good out flow, and low enough below the seat for good intake into the fan.

Don't know exactly how much more hot air is carried away, but I feel better with it there.

Red93stang: its about damn time HD actually fixed this problem. i'm still on my original stator and VR, im keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way. but like you said, only time will tell.
Mike Van V: that's exactly what i was thinking about! could i bother you for some pics to see you set up. and how do you have it wired in? i was thinking about using the accessory plug.

Yeah I didn't know thats what he had,I looked at the personal and didn't see any Pictures or Personal info so I just went w/ it. THE 1125 could use a small computer fan, about a year after my buddy Gary bought his AT only 4,344mls the Stator went out on his. It was covered by Warranty took them 3weeks to do the job. I bought the Elect/ AND the service manual for future use.Mike Van V-has a good point the Draw on system should'nt be worth worrying about,THE pict., in the Manual looks like theres room! Thanks for the heads up.[smirk]

No, no pictures.
It just sits there, on top of the regulator, held in place by all of the harnesses, hoses and subframe.
I do have grates or wire framed blade protectors ripped from old computers on it to keep "stuff" out of the blades. Or you can buy them from Digi-Key (below).

This is the fan I used -

I wired it into the tail light (always on) AND and to an on-off switch. On 40 degree mornings....I don't turn it on...!

Hope that helps some.

Mike
