Hey,

I'm relatively new to motorcycles and mechanics itself but I feel like my bike is making some noises around the primary cover and engine that shouldn't be there. I tend to become paranoid about these kinds of things so I figured I would post here to see whats going on.

I'm not sure if it sounded like this last riding season or not but either way I didn't notice it. Over the winter all I have done is change the engine and primary oil (amsoil 20/50, one quart into primary), adjust the primary chain (because of the noises - specd to ~3/8 to 1/2in of play through the primary cover), and I also changed over the stock bars to clubman cr bars. Bike has race pipe, ecm, and k/n air kit. Everything else is mechanically stock.

What do you guys think? Thanks

Hi eblanche,

My 03 xb9s has been making the same noise (sounds the same as your video anyway) since I started riding it this season.
I'm going to change my primary oil this week. See if that helps.

I read another thread a few below this one where the main shaft bearing in the crankcase was going bad. Hopefully this is not that issue.

I'm going to be watching this thread for any more knowledgable replies :)

I honestly don't hear anything in your vid that sounds unusual. Air-cooled pushrod motors tend to make (& amplify) more clatter than you'd hear from a typical liquid-cooled DOHC motor. I don't think you've got a problem...
