So.... I went down, hard.

Just over 30 years old now, been riding motorcycles for a tad over 25 years. Therefore, I've had my fair share of accidents on and off road, and this was my first off-road bike accident on the road.

Last Monday, my roommate found a gas gas 270cc trials bike for sale for too cheap.  Being the hooligans we all are, of course he picked it up.

I raced home from work Monday evening ready to see what trials bikes were all about.  My roomie was out riding it when I got home, so I quickly changed out of my casual working man's clothes and got ready to get on the bike.  Roommate came tearing down the street into my yard a bit faster than I'd like so I took his helmet out to him as he was squidding it out.
Well that was my cue to get on, so I dawned my Icon Variant. Alpinestars smx plus boots, Alpinestars smx2 gloves and took off on the bike.  Leaving my court, I pulled the front wheel up a bit, and was surprised how easy it was to balance the gas gas. As the bike is geared so low and idle set so low, it seemed that third gear was ideal for cruising.  I turned around at a stop sign and decided, unfortunately, to see what kind of balls the bike had. Figuring it was a 270cc and weighed about 150 lbs, thought it would be pretty stout.

So, of course, I grab a fist full of throttle from idle, the front wheel rises unnaturally high and fast, next thing I know I'm chasing the bike, moving about fifteen miles per hour. I know I should have let go, but I didn't.  So I smash the ground, knee first, forearm second. Not sure if I hit my head, but  I noticed the bike was still running so I tried to crawl over to it so I can kill the engine, but I can't.  I crawl off the road into the grass and try to pull out my cell phone to call my roomie, my hands aren't working right though.

A lady came by on a golf cart, so I had her call my roommate.  He drives over in his civic, and one we realize that I can't get in that tiny car and call an ambulance.

The bus takes me to the closest hospital who then gives me some pain meds and an xray. That hospital decides that I'm far too broken for them, and I need to head to the major trauma center downtown, same one that treats IndyCar drivers and motogp accidents

The trauma hospital xrayed me again and decided that I needed an external fixation to reduce swelling enough that they could repair my knee plates and screws.

Five excruciating days later, the surgeon cleared me for surgery, and he spent six and a half hours repairing my knee.

Now I sit here awaiting to be released.  I will spend the next three months without bearing any weight in it and  hopefully be at 90% mobility within six months.

The surgeon said I got really lucky; usually these breaks result in severed arteries and then amputation.

Be careful out there guys. I never thought I'd be in this situation, but it happens. Fully preventable, think before you act.  Life, it's fragile.

That suck to hear. Glad to see you're ok, for the most part... Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I've been keeping up with this through your instagram page. Sucks that you went down like that and I'm hoping this doesn't bring your spirits down too much to keep you from riding again. I was 21 and was in a horrible accident. I died and came back and when I woke up 10 days after, I had broken everything in my body but my arms and legs. It sucks and there's a long road of recovery. Luckily you'll be cleared and free soon. I spent 3 months flat on my back and had to learn how to walk again.

Things could be worse and they will get better. Just make sure you follow the doctors instructions, don't try to rush your recovery and don't let it scare you away from what you love. I'm sending out best wishes and hope for a quick and 100% recovery for you!

I had a nasty ski accident 4 years ago, f'ed me up pretty good. Sold my bike and rehab'ed for 2 years. Agreed and rep point to Zero for the story.

Shit happens, sorry about your leg. That's a ton of hardware.

Yeah keeping decent spirits about this and understanding and respecting the recovery time frame is what will pull me out of it.

I'm sorry to hear that happened. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Just make sure you listen to the doc and don't push yourself too early. I had a nasty incident a few years ago that almost ended me up as an amputee. Luckily after a few surgeries I was only condemned to my crutches for nearly 6 months. Needless to say I now follow the doctors orders adamantly. During my experience my mind drifted to dark places. Keep your head in the right place and this experience will be a better one. Think of it as a learning experience. Think happy thoughts. Lol.

Not trying to sound like a dick or anything but I was extremely relieved to see it wasn't the 1190 that you wrecked on. My heart dropped a solid two inches when I read the thread title [sad]

This is very true. But at the same time you cannot let self preservation keep you from what you love. Do what you do with a level head, be conscious of yourself and your limits, and be readily prepared to reap the consequences of your action should something happen. But do not let the fear of failure keep you from the joys of life. Life is fragile. But you only have so much time in it to experience it to the fullest. Two sides of the same coin I suppose. That's my ¢.02 anyways.

Heal fast and best wishes.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Yeah I'm glad it wasn't the 1190 as well!
This won't stop me from riding, but definitely will slow me for a while.

Noone, so happy to see you alive I can keep the 1190 in shape for you! Get well soon.

Damnn dude thats nasty. One of the girls I play volleyball with fell back and broke her forearm/wrist. 7 screws and a plate. It shows it doesn't take much. Best of luck to ya. Maybe we can supe up a wheel chair for ya so you have something to ride in the meantime. I think an 1125 motor should work nicely:D

I know the feeling all to well. Glad to see you still able to post with us. Heal up fast bud.

Damn, glad you are ok and taking it in stride. This is my left foot, happened July of 2011. A forklift at work got me, I am 100% now. Listen to the docs and keep a positive attitude!

Sorry to read this, man. :( It can (and will) happen to any one of us. Stay safe out there guys.
