What is going on here?

Hi,
I bought an xb9 sx. I am still waiting for the service manual but wanted to know what the black hose on the right (in the picture ) is supposed to do and especially why it looks as if someone was trying to "build" something.

There is probably a simple answer to it but I wanted to make sure everything is ok before I take the bike on the road.

Yep everything is ok. Its just the Breather reroute mod.

Read up on it.
So basically the lower hose is to catch the oil, I assume.

Will look at it tomorrow to figure out what / how it was done exactly.

It's a good mod, if done correctly no need to worry. It looks fine from here. You got it, the lower host will "catch" the oil, and you should drain it periodically, or add a better can. Honestly it shouldnt leak much, and you could probably pull the drain fitting off it and just VTA.
