XB12XT heat sheild

Ordered some heat shield material and exhaust wrap yesterday for my 12XT. My plan is to wrap the rear header under the seat and frame and put the heat shield material on the inside of the frame and under the seat to reduce radiated heat. I'm hoping this helps because summer time down in Louisiana is brutal in slow traffic situations.

I'm planning on checking temperatures before and after on the bike to see some numerical results. Will share with the forum when complete hopefully sometime next week.

OK, finally got my stuff fixed up last week.

1. I cut out a heat shield for under the seat from some roof flashing I had laying around. Seams to help out so far. The main purpose was to close the frame hole and gap between the seat and frame on the right side. Also the radiant heat barrier will keep some of the heat from ever reaching the seat. I have not shot temperatures on this with the laser thermometer.

2. I cut a piece of the radiant heat shield material to fit inside the frame where my leg passes. I'm sure everyone has noticed how hot the frame gets in this area from the exhaust. I used a laser thermometer to get some real data on the change, rather than only a seat of the pants opinion for this. I'm showing a 30 degree drop in temperature across the frame from top to bottom. I still need to shoot temperatures on the left and right frames, just for compare.

3. I wrapped the rear exhaust header with exhaust wrap. The laser thermometer showed interesting results. The temperature actually increased with the wrap! I ended up double wrapping the header but have not shot temperatures yet. But it is something to consider.

I would be interested to know how you get on with this. As reducing the heat on my right leg is my next project.

I installed only the right side air scoop just before my trip to Deal's Gap and North Georgia just before the 4th weekend. Over 60mph it makes a HUGE seat of the pants difference. Ofcourse I never ride with some sort of riding suit. I wore my Hein Gerieke textile suit. If finally hit 95+ on the freeway at the end of the trip and felt a little heat, but nothing like before. It doesn't do a lot of good cruising around town. My next step if I do it is to have the headers ceramic coated. With another bike and buying a third in August, don't know if the funds will be there for that.

I just did added a righ hand air scoop (DIY mod on this site) and as you say it makes a huge difference. Reduced fan time and reduced heat on leg.

I am happy now.
