Hey guys,

Here's the deal, I'm looking at a 2005 9R with about 6k miles. Owned by the same guy for 8 years now. He's the only owner.

It's in my price range and in immaculate condition. The only thing that threw me off was what he told me about the battery. He said he stopped riding it in the last year and because of that he had to use a battery tender to charge it up before it would start. But he said if I rode it consistently that wouldn't happen.

What do I need to know about this bike before I buy it?

Thanks

You're going to love it buy it.

in all seriousness it could be something as simple as needing a new battery. Other than that it could be voltage regulator or some connector somewhere but start with the basics. When was that battery installed/how long has it been in there?

He said the battery was replaced a year ago, and he has only ridden it once since then and he needed the battery charger. It was about 8 months after changing the battery. I think he must have purchased the new battery charger when he changed the battery, but I'll be sure to get that info out of him.

What about ECM tuning, is it worth buying the cable and using the software to modify, or just leave it?

03-07s had a problem with the regulator. 08s and up had a factory upgraded regulator. they went from a flat-pin style regulator connection to a round-pin style connection. the flat-pin style had tendencies to arc real easy given the circumstances (i.e., constant high rpm's, lenghty high load speeds) things that potentially over-loaded the regulator on regular basis. happened to my 07 firebolt after 10k miles.

this issue wreaked havoc on batteries, fuses, stators, regulators on a big number of xb's

sounds like a great bike, only tune it if it's needed/something not right...have had my '03 for over 7 years, no issues with the voltage regulator or stator, she's just shy of 64k and original belt. care for her well and she'll be fine.

from your screen-name can i assume you're from PA? i'm in amish country..lancaster county. if the bike you speak of is down this way i'd be happy to look at it with you and check condition.....see what's wrong with it if anything. you did not mention price but sounds like a decent find. or send me pics of it and perhaps a judgment can be made from them. regards, john
