Hey guys, new here, and thinking about buying a Buell as my next bike! But, I have a question...

It looks like one of the main differences between the 9R and 9S is the handlebars...the 9S has clipons whereas the 9R has more dirt bike styled handlebars (correct me if this is wrong). If so:

Can you change the handlebars from one to the other...i.e. can I put the dirt bike styled handlebars on the 9R, and if so, is there a kit out there that I can buy, or what would I need/where could I buy it?

Thanks in advance! I am more used to the dirt bike style of handlebars, and would like to learn the bike while using what I am used to, then probably change back to stock clipons after a good break in period.

If you're already riding motorcycles, there shouldnt be a huge learning curve going from dirt bars to a firebolt. Not enough of a curve to spend the money and time in my opinion.

I grew up on dirt and its just a matter of getting your bearings on a new riding position.

I don't know that I've seen the dirt bars on a bolt, but not saying it hasn't or can't happen. It's more if a clearance issue with the fairing than anything.

The s has regular bars and the r is the race position clip-on style. You just had it backwards.

The S model is a Lightning.(standard riding)
The R model is a Firebolt.(lean into riding)

I agree with Richard about clearance being the issue if you put the S bars on the R. Probably the easiest fix would be to keep the top triple and drill holes for the S clamps instead of switching it all out. You're probably gonna have to buy new cables as the S needs more length. [up]

Good Luck and Welcome. [up]
