So what is the differences between the XBS and the XBR models? is it mainly the riding position due to the handle bars or is there more?

Looks, riding position, and a few other small things (where electronics are placed/etc).

XBS (Lightning) has a more upright position whereas the XBR (Firebolt) has a slightly more aggressive postion

Engine wise they are exact, granted its 9 to 9 or 12 to 12

R has a little more protection from wind, a more agressive ridding position and clip on bars. S seat is more upright handle bars tapper back a bit and there is a low modle also 4 different seats avalable . So as far as comfort the lightning is a bit easier to adjust to different riders heights . Realy it comes down to what style you prefer and what your more comfortable kickin a leg over. Xbs can be frankensteined into what ever you want r with s tail s with r tail . 9's have a longer rpm band 12's have more torque bottom end but top end is about the same.

My vote is for frankeinstein aka lightningbolt

I put handlebars on my firebolt that mimic the S riding position. Best of both worlds.
