I really like the look of the race mufflers in silver/polished. Anyone ever sanded the coating off their non-race muffler? I was prepping mine for paint, started sanding it, and found it would polish up real nice. Anyone done this or see any issues with it?

i think you'de be unhappy trying to polish the stocker, its soft metal and you'll find pits all over it. you can get rattle can chrome paint, i used it on my trucks diff cover. it looks more like really gloosy gray with alittle silver flake in it. not bad. but not like chrome. post some pics when done

polishing raw still looks great, for a few hours. All it will take is one humid evening and it'll be rust. Clearing it sucks, it'll last longer, but less then a year before the clear starts to peel and rust underneath. Best bet is to paint it with high temp paint of a lavor to your liking.

And that chrome paint is high temp?

I never ride in the rain, so I am not sure about rust. Might try it for the start of the upcoming season. Worse comes to worse I will just paint it when it rusts a little. If it can make it a season, I have no problem sanding it every winter. I will post pics when I am done with all my winter mods here in the next couple weeks ;)

Also cut, rounded, and powder-coated my stock levers. Am very happy with the results. Post pics of those soon too.

Another option would be a Polished Silver Ceramic coat. No issues with burning paint since the ceramic is high temp (1500*) and all you would need to do is drop it off to the coating shop.

Here is a stock painted pipe next to a ceramic silver coated race pipe.

it doesnt matter if you ride in the rain bare steel rusts almost instantly without clear. if u sand it bare i guarantee it will be rusting within a few days

All it takes is one humid evening and it'll rust instantly. You don't need rain. It WILL RUST LITERALLY IN DAYS, if you have a humid evening, it will rust within hours. PAINT it with something, save your self the huge trouble of polishing that turd and just scuff it up and paint it.

Has anyone had this done? What would I expect to pay to get this done? Color options?

Here in South Florida, it would start rusting before you finished polishing it.

I had my last muffler Ceramic coated and it cost..... hold on to your pants....... $40 (that was just drop it off and pick it up done, no prep work at all from me). That was for either a gloss, satin, or flat black/silver but I can't imagine it costing much more for the shiny silver since it is the same process just a different coat of ceramic. So the material might cost a little more but that's about it so high end I would guess , $100, but different shop charge different too.

cool thanks X
Just called a place near me and he said around $55 but he needed to see it. Thinking about the black satin for the body and polished silver ceramic for the tips (thats extra- $75ish):D
Sorry for the thread jack Macbuell but all pertinent info!

I believe an automotive clear coat will tarnish as it has moisture in it, but if you wanted a clear finish you can do a clear powder coat, which is chemically cleaned and baked on from powder so no moisture will get into the metal to rust or discolor it.

This second frame was set aside to tarnish then coated.

Yeah, but the entire look of the bike would have to flow with the design, otherwise it will just look unfinished[smirk]
