Any one ever remove your cam cover? I want to switch my magnesium colored one to the black that I have. The service manual doesn't tell you how to remove or re-install it. Maybe I am looking it over if it is in there. Thanks guys.

It's actually pretty straight forward.

Drill out the two rivets on the circular cover and remove the outer plate to uncover the inner silver colored timing cover. Remove that cover as well (two Phillips screws)

Under that you will find the cam position sensor, it's held in by two hexagonal stand-offs. Remove those. You will also have to follow the cable coming out of the bottom of the cover to find out where it goes and disconnect it. In order to get the cable out of the cam cover you will have to take apart the connector.

Once you get the sensor out of the way you will see the timing cup, it's held on by a small 3/8" (ish) bolt. Remove that bolt and the timing cup.

Now you can take out all of the bolts that are holding the cover in place. Give the cover a couple of love taps with a rubber mallet or some other non-hard object to loosen up the gasket and you you should be able to easily remove the cover. It is going to be in your best interest to lean the bike over with the primary side down, that way you will have less risk of the cams falling out when you pull the cover off. That little piece of advice would have saved me a few hours and quite a few swear words.

Assemble in the reverse order. Make sure you use a new gasket. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!! Make sure you perform the "Static Timing Procedure" once you have the sensor re-attached.

Thanks buellysses. Now I just need to find a way to lean my bike over. Is the kick stand enough lean?? I am doing the primary cover right now and i have it up on a pitbull rear stand and a front stand. Is the "Static Timing Procedure" pretty straight forward and in the service manual?

@loose1 Haha, yeah, I forgot about that part. I had the bike completely apart when I did mine.

I'd lean it over as much as you can, maybe lean it against a wall or table? I mean this isn't 100% necessary, but if the cams fall out it's a pain in the ass to get them back in.
