I have a 2000 x1 lightning, here recently i started having problems shifting. it started by it was hard to shift to first, u had to push kinda hard on shifter, also there was tension shifting into 4th and 5th. that was 3 days ago. today, going into first acts up every once and awhile, the big thing now is it is hard as heck to get into 5th, you actually have to put alot of pressure with your foot to get it inot fifth, still tension with 4th also... any ideas??? any would help and be much appreciated....:(

Could be as simple as clutch adjustment. Sounds like maybe your clutch is not disengaging completely. Beyond that id be here asking the same question.

i was wondering that myself, only thing that is throwing me off that is it dosent act up shifting into 2nd and 3rd

my buddy who has the exact model took it for a ride and think im going to have to change the clutchs, he said just a new clutch kit. sound reasonable??? right now im running a barnett clutch in it

We had an X1 in recently, and also a Sportster with similar issues. The Evo style trannys are pretty bullet proof. You might have a look at your detent plate. You have to pull the primary chain and clutch basket to get at it. It's a cheap part and easy to replace. The X1 had a broken retaining ring which let the detent plate sit at an angle and caused unusual wear. The Sporty had all kinds of weird wear to the plate..after replacement, it shifted like new.

Ok thank you. Ill see wat I can come up with.

I just happened upon this post while searching for other information so I thought I would share my recent shifting problem and solution.

My problem turned out to be a worn set of "Nylon Washer / bearings" that are item #44 in the X1 Parts Manual or part number N0513.T BEARING, pedal - plastic (2).

The shift peg was biding as a result of the bearings being worn.

I replaced the bearings and shifting was restored to normal. I went down to my local Harley Dealer and he took them out of a Sportster Shift peg assembly as he did not have the bearing available separately.

As an FYI you can find these bearings in brass on eBay which I suspect will last much longer than the nylon ones.

ok. thanks everyone for your inputs, only thing that is confusion the hell outta me is that it isnt all the gears having the problem, 2nd and 3rd are just fine. is that normal with the problem and solutions your all are inputing???

STATUS UPDATE--- found that the primary chain shoe failed and the piece that broke off was wedged in the shift drum in the tranny. clutches are perfect and no debris was found in the clutch or the basket.
