The bike is an 07 xb12s. 5500k. No mods. It was running fine and then started backfiring from the exhaust, then dying. I was able to get it home and now when I turn the key to the on position and kill switch to on,the engine light comes on, then blinks and goes out. At the same time, the fan comes on and goes off when the engine light goes off.The fan used to only come on while riding and HOT or when turned off hot. Cranking, it just turns over but doesn't fire. The first thing that comes to mind for me is that it's not getting fuel. Do these fuel pumps run all the time? Or is it gravity feed after start up? Would this even throw a code? Thanks, any thought would be a help.

fuel is the first thing I thought of too. Maybe fouled spark plugs? or fuel pump went out?

If it backfired, it tells me there is unburnt fuel. It sounds like some sort of electrical problem preventing it from staying on. Maybe a bad sensor or bad ground.

Thanks, I'm going through now and checking all the connections that I know too. I was able to get the bike started and it ran Ok for a minute, then the same thing..hesatated, stubled then died. The tach also was jumping all over the place while this was going on. (like an electrical issue)

I have never had this issue on a bike, however, I have had it several times in cars. In all instances it was caused by a loose ground, or a bad alternator. I don't know much about these bikes but I'd at least take a good look at all electrical connections to/from battery, grounds, and spark plugs/wires.

Thanks, Thats what I'm hoping to find. The check engine light coming on and then flashing has me stumped though. I just dont know what all the components are connected to the engine light to check. Battery connections are good and clean. I don't have a repair manual for it so that makes things a bit harder also..

possibly a regulator issue; the firebolts have one from 03-07.

they were upgraded in 08

This is good stuff. No I don't have emcspy yet but I'll try the other method and see what I come up with. Thanks for the tip.
