All I got was they're a bunch of whiney bishes and they're doing the testing wrong. It even said on the equipment 45 degrees, but it was horizontally placed, not to mention they were just static testing. Should have been a rolling test, both acceleration and deceleration.

Light Vehicles (passenger and goods):

ISO 362:1998: Old ISO 362 standard. Still used today (Jan 2012) for type approval in UNECE R51.02
ISO 362-1:2007: with its corriganda Cor 1:2009: latest revised ISO 362 standard for measuring acceleration noise emissions for vehicles of type M (light vehicles) and type N (trucks)
SAE J986: revision 1998: American standard for light vehicles. Describes an Acceleration test followed by a Deceleration test.
Different microphone distance: 15m instead of 7.5m to reflect local environmental situations with more space, wider roads, larger distance between vehicle and by-passers.
Different track layout: start zone at -7.5m and end zone from +7.5m to +38m
For the acceleration test:
Approach speed: 48kmh +/-1.2kmh (30mph target speed +/- 0.75mph)
Throttle release is at maximum rated rpm in the end zone or max speed before leaving the end zone
For the deceleration test:
Approach speed: speed of throttle release of the acceleration test
Exit target: when the engine speed has dropped one-half or when the end of the end zone is reached
Environmental conditions: different wind speeds
Conclusion: Somewhat similar to ISO 362:1998, but measured with completely different parameters, and also different limits
SAE J1470: American adoption of ISO 362:1998:
Acceleration noise for both light and heavy vehicles (M and N type vehicles)
Measurement: compared to ISO362:1998, 2 additional runs have to be measured (so 4 instead of 2)
Other differences are minor

Motorcycles:

F76A US: American standard for motorbikes acceleration noise
ASEP Regulation 41: extension for motorbikes ISO362-2:2009.
ISO 362-2:2009: for type L vehicles (motorbikes)

Not saying this is 100% accurate by any stretch either, but I got the above info from http://www.lmsintl.com/pass-by-noise-testing/standards

i respect canadians, have a few friends and alot of customers up there, it's a beautiful country.......but chrysler!
we're sniffing your exhaust....you can't ride on our roadways in the winter months....we don't like your decibel readings....bunch of G damn Nazis.

Did they call you a Hoodlum on national TV? :D That's the only word I could pick up from the whole thing.

That's retarded. I don't understand people sometimes. My truck has blacked out tail lights, it's way louder than my bike, and has illegal tint. I've never even been pulled over for it. Some areas people are just whiners. Just because you have something like that doesn't mean you're an annoying ahole. When I drive through neighborhoods I keep the noise down, don't attract attention or try to annoy people.

I am so glad I live in PA. I have never been pulled over for my bike being too loud. My buell is basically running a gutted stock muffler and is as loud as any straight pipe Harley. I get nothing but compliments about it, even from cops. Don't the cops up there have better things to do? [down]

This ^^^ . Except I got pulled over for having "Head light out."

Haha! My XB also made it onto the CBC news when our 'Noisy Vehicle' bylaw came into effect last year. With a Drummer slip-on, I was right on the 96dB limit. :p

By comparison my little KLX250SF SuperMoto measured a whopping 109 dB!

I lived in a gated community once when I was back in Virginia and they got some people on the HOA board that had a hard on for bikes. Decided they wanted to do decible checks and all, try and run us out. I used a decible meter from my work and my Roadglide was 98 decibles and my Poulan leafblower was close to 120. Shot a video of the test, went to the next board meeting along with about 30 other bikers that lived there, not sure which changed their mind to leave us alone the video or the huge group of us. They would alway get up and stare at the guard gate when we came by looking for our sticker they gave us and all on our front forks. I remember I would always have the Ted Nugnet song playing on the mp3 where he is singing "kiss my ass" in the song was funny as heck! My wife would just shake her head at me as I cued it up for them!

I have a friend that when we were in college we had bikes and he ended up selling his because the neighborhood he lived in "banned" bikes basically. It was also a gated community, but extremely ritzy (tiger woods lives there) and you had to be escorted by the guard from the gate to your house. He said it was just too much of a PITA every time he wanted to go home. How do people actually WANT to live there???

I'm a friend of Sweb and also live in Montreal,Quebec,Canada. This whole db's thing is, IMO, just a reason/a way to "collect" money .... If you are intercepted and fail the db test(100 db's) you are finned 161$. If you refuse to pass the test(it's a pilot project) you are finned 250$ ... either way you are screwed ... It even says that even if your exhaust system is stock and you "bust" the db meter(i.e. KTM 690) you are still finned .... money-money-moneeeyyyyyy [smirk]

Heh,,, And Canadians make fun our guns, ,,,, The US has some screwed up govt as well, but fer gawds sake,,,, I love my trips into Canada, but they sure do embrace a Nanny state govt. Read the US constitution for the second amendment. Its not to protect yourself from criminals or burglars (although thats a good reason to own a gun) but its necessary to protect from an oppressive govt. .

how true. one of the great states in America.
PA motorcycle pros:
1-we "suggest" you wear a helmet but could care less if you do or not.
2-we require your motorcycle to be inspected annually but nobody ever checks if it is.
3-we do not sniff your exhaust
4-we live by the long-held belief that "loud pipes save lives."
5- we have the highest amount of motorcycle dealers, repair shops, and registered new bike sales per capita of any state in the nation.
6. your annual state registration renewal can be done online. however, you must check the block indicating whether you are an Eagles or Steelers fan. You cannot check both blocks. If one block remains unchecked your renewal is denied.

All this 'banning motorcycles' nonsense actually started in the USA in New York City about 10 years ago. :p

It's being reported in our local media that our 'Noisy Vehicle Bylaw' resulted in only ONE ticket being issued in the past year since it was introduced! AND that ticket was issued to a car AND it was thrown out in court!

I think Quebec is realy down on bikes from what I have read, high insuance rates the no winter riding.I have had friends pulled over for none stock mufflers ( not loud ) and now noise laws. Here in Ontario some towns have started local noise laws tageting motorcycles only.Go Cytocis wasn,t Calgary trying to get some sort of red light camera setup only with a DB meter that would take a picture of your plate if your to loud ?

Yup, it's the first of it's kind anywhere and we are the guinea pigs! It coincided with the Noisy Vehicle Bylaw as the method of policing & enforcement. It's a manned contraption mounted to an unmarked bylaw control vehicle parked in areas where noisy vehicles are deemed to be a problem (mostly strips of bars being cruised by the chopper crowd). It's equipped with microphones & cameras, and if it detects a vehicle over 96dB, the registered owner is mailed a ticket.

Frankly I am not sure which saddens me more: the bylaw itself, or the fact that we need a bylaw to discourage the cruiser losers from
parading up & down the same street over & over. The world has over 68 million miles of roads; go explore them!

That's my understanding too. A friend of mine moved out there several years ago with his new Duc 1098 but never registered it when he found out about insurance. He hasn't ridden it since.

I also recall around the same time a whole truckload of Buell 1125s 25th anniversary editions showed up on the showroom floor of one of our local dealers. There was seriously like 20 of them; you could hardly get to the rack of HD-emblazoned dew rags without wading through a sea of 1125s. They were all unsold units from Quebec!
