Axle removal nut size?

I don't recall the exact size but a 1/2" drive spark plug socket used backwards works very nicely! [up]
 
wait.. how would I turn the 1/2" drive spark plug socket? Stick a ratchet extension all the way through the opening on the opposite side?

yes. most all the older cars had plugs that were 13/16th inch outer hex shell. get one of those spark plug 1/2 inch drive sockets, they are extremely common, pull out the rubber plug holder insert if it has one, put any 1/2 inch extension in thru the socket where the sparkplug would go and install in axle. it really works well as dro said
 
You should have the axle tool in the toolkit on the back of your bike, but yes they are both 7/8
