So I got a 2003 XB9R with just under 11,000 miles on it. While out on a ride today I noticed oil on top of the crank case. Wasn't a significant amount but I pulled over and took a look at it and it seems to be coming from somewhere on the back of the rear jug and leaking over to the crankcase. Oil levels were within range. just enough oil leaked to pool up a tiny puddle on the back of the rear jug. Any known issues for oil leaks in that region? I'm really hoping it's not leaking from the jug itself. I can't see the area very well so I'll have to take a few things apart to better examine it. Any common part failures I should look for?

Sounds better than having to tear the whole jug off. Wont get a chance to look at it till the weekend though. I'm hoping just some bolts rattled loose. Seems to be a trend with my bike.

crappy base cylinder gaskets by HD... also rocker cover bolts (4) on the top use the same gasket material. when the engine is cool/cold, clean it off with alcohol to remove the oil residue. fire the bike up and go for a short ride, enough to get her hot. then check the entire engine again for leaks to verify where it's actually leaking from.

Mine has a rear base gasket leak...small, but still leaking. Actually fairly common on these bike especially if they've sat dry for a while like mine did before I bought it. The crappy paper gaskets dry out and start to leak. When you get it fixed, the way to prevent this is 1) don't let the bike sit a long time 2) properly warm up the engine before you really get on the throttle. Cometic makes a full top end gasket kit for the BUELL XB and it's pretty solid. I'm rebuilding my top end this fall/winter and going to do a thorough inspection.
