Hello everyone, I just bought a 2004 XB12R with 25.000 miles on it for cheap. The bike didn't start, I normally would pass up buying a bike that doesn't start. But for $1800.00 , I had to have it. The rest of the bike is in really good condition. Anyway, here is what is going on. It cranks over great and the gauges due a full sweep and there are no codes on the bike; I can hear the fuel pump running. All she does is maybe idle for 2 or 3 seconds and then dies. If you open the throttle have way, she pops and backfires and don't start. I removed the air filter and shot some carb cleaner in the throttle body and she runs on that. I am just guessing, but sounds like I have a fuel problem>>?? Any help on this issue would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi and welcome! I would have had a hard time resisting that buy as well.

Without knowing more history, I would suggest performing the TPS calibration procedure. There are dozens of articles and youtube videos on the topic (google Buell TPS reset). Many search hits will be from this forum. TPS is the throttle position sensor. To properly perform the procedure, you will need to download software such as Tunerpro RT , ECMSpy for Mono, or ECMDroid (links are in my profile), and a data link cable or bluetooth module. I sell those if you are in need. If you already have a cable, please record some data and I'll be happy to take a look!

There could be several other causes as well, such as fuel pump pressure, or intake temperature and/or engine temperature sensors. Another possibility - again, without knowing more details - is that something called the AFV parameter could be way off. It can be reset with the above tuning software. These are the easy things to check before moving on.

FYI: for the TPS reset on a 2004 XB12R, the TPS degrees should read 5.2° - 5.6° with the throttle closed; and should idle between 1050-1150 RPM @ 285° F.

I've got a complete intake you can attempt swapping? off a known running bike (so tps is good, injectors are clean and the seals are good)

PM me for details

Should just let me have the troubled bikes. Probably 7/10 pop up here in hands of people that can't fix them without expensive troubleshooting or parts needs. Just cause it's cheap don't make it a good deal

Thanks ReadyXB for all the information. I checked the fuel pressre and she is at 50 psi. I just downloaded the ECMSPY software on my laptop. I will go ahead and reset the tps tomorrow and see what happens. The bike did come with the cable so I am good on that end. It also came with a 2004 Buell Firebolt repair manual. This bike is all new to me , so I am learning quickly. I am a diesel technician by trade, so I am very mechanically incline. Just need to know where everything is located and how it works. Thanks again
